ZenSilk
one hose is the traditional hookah style. The hookah began getting attention, and was beginning to get used at parties in America so the need for more hoses came because of the amount of people trying to get in on the fluffy white smoke action all at once. 1 hosed models are great if you are alwaus woth people who love to pass the hose and what-not, or if you are alone or with like 2 other people. People vary, though. Some are impatient, some are lazy, some just like being big-boys (or girls). They like holding their own hoses, it gives them a sense of belonging (whether it's conscious or subconscious). SOme people don't feel like passing a hsoe around. Some people think it takes too long. And sometimes you have 12 people over wanting some hookah. One hose for 12 people is a mad house. When you have a 4 hose, thats 1 hose for 3 people, that's perfect. It's almost as if you have 4 one hosed hookahs. Ok, that is the human characteristic related group of reasons. Now, the scientific reason. When you pull on the hose, you get smoke. Simple as that. You suck, it creates suction, it pulls the smoke down from the burning tobaccco and glycerine because the smoke has nowhere else to go, it goes down the stem, into the water, back out, into the base, then into the heart, then the hose, then your mouth. Simple stupid, stupid. So when you plug 3 other hoses while pulling from one, the smoke still has nowhere to go so it follows it's normal path. How could you say "it smokes worse" or "doesn't smoke as well"? Of cours eit does, it's the exact same only there's 3 other tentacles protruding from the heart. So where, i ask you, does the smoke go that makes "a multiple hose hookah smoke worse than a 1 hosed hookah"??? Does it go on vacation? Take a nap? Drive over the border? I don't think it does... Geiseric
I think what a lot of people have a problem with is the increase of suction, and therefore to increase of heat being pulled down on the shisha. I know I have to smack a lot of my better-lunged friends upside the head sometimes for inhaling to hard and burning the shisha by practically sucking the coal into the bowl through the foil. When you have four people pulling at one pipe at the same time, its going to eventually lead to two people inhaling really hard and messing up your heat management. At least, thats often my problem. thecoalition
i dont like multi hose hookahs for the reasons above.everytime ive smoked with others off a multi hose i end up getting yelled at because "youre lungs are used to this its not fair" so i end up lighting my own single hose and then become my own party.i also dont like the multis that are not autoseal because half the time people forget to plug their tip and then you end up waiting to take your hit.lastly...heat management blows if youre smoking with say 3 others that dont understand the mechanics of hookah and heat.overall pain in my ass. but whoever says there is better or worse smoke....well they just have no grasp on science or reality. manic007
I'm going to agree with everyone above. But I would add that having 2 hoses is fine, thats my upper limit. With 2 hoses I've noticed that you have to move the charcoal around more, but even with 2 people sucking at the same time (and yes it happens, even by accident!) there isn't much chance of burning the tobacco. But with 4 hoses, or 6, I reckon you're asking for trouble. You simply can't co-ordinate that many people - well with laymen anyway!
Plain Old Me
It is definitely a bit harder to get a multi hose hitting well with good, fluffy smoke but you get used to the heat management and you can definitely get it to work well. I have noticed though that some of the juicier tobaccos tend to lose their flavor a little quicker with more people smoking- which makes sense as you use the tobacco a bit more. I also go through charcoal a bit more quickly. Edited January 19, 2008 by Plain Old Me
waterboi
I am going to agree with the above posts. But I believe the misconception comes into to play that a 4 hose smokes worse do to the fact that the other three hoses have to plugged and people don't fully plug the hose or someone forgets. Also it is harder to manage four hoses on a hookah with a group of people and heat management could be and issue then. As for better or worse smoke I have no clue. I guess there is just to many variables that could cause people to think otherwise.
ZenSilk
ok, but heat management is the same, and people just take their hits from their hoses. SO it's the same as if i passed the hose to them. ....
waterboi
yes that is the same i would think
Plain Old Me
The only differences could be if more than 1 person is taking a hit at once and that you generally take hits much faster out of the hookah because more people are smoking at once.
