Now you need to figure out how to make your ban hammer strike fear into the hearts of vendors. Perhaps an official vendor review section done by well established smokers, that carries more weight than the regular section, with comprehensive overall reviews and whatnot. Something that lets the newcomers have a quick understanding of whats what in the hookah realm. That way we could avoid the OH HI IM NEW< WHERE SHOULD I BUY FROM? threads. I've always thought there should be a more professional review section that factors in individual problems, but have more clout then the huge lists of reviews we have.

In all fairness I know a lot of new poeple DO search before asking but if we can't get people to read the RULES getting them to read reviews is gonna be tough. huh.gif

I know, I know... But in their defense, there is quite a few legit people who do, as you said. My main point still is that I think there is a demand for reviews with a more CNET feel to them, done by people with real experience. You know what I'm saying? Maybe I should make a basic outline for a website just for reviews, and then send invites to people who have been here for a while and see if anyone is interested. The trouble is giving it some sort of appeal. Writing an in depth review and keeping up on the status of vendors and products is a lot of work. It's kind of been in my mind for a while to organize something in that style, but the thought of the sheer amount of work has always put me off it. Not to mention my html is really stale. I'd do it in wiki format, but that would kind of defeat the purpose of making it expert-centric.

Someone a while back made a review site...more than one person has tried it actually if i remember right. They didn't last.

The human element makes it impossible to standardize reviews. Too many people put emphasis on different things. Some folks dn't mind too much if the order is missing something as long as it comes quickly, other people make more of a deal out of how long the order took over anything else. Same problems with Tobacco reviews. Everyone has different priorities when reviewing ANYTHING.

True, and that's the real issue (both comments). How to make it so obviously standard and legit that anyone could go to it and quickly find what they want to know. It would require a long dev. process by known hookah veterans, with lots of hype. Keeping it active and in the forefront and continuing to generate interest would also be a big issue.

I think we could avoid the personal preferences issues by keeping it very focused on various aspects, such as speed, quality, packaging, accuracy, etc.

With product reviews, high quality and up to date content would be the issue, I think. Individual aspects could be distributed through quality, aesthetics, functionality, size, and durability.

A competitive ranking system would also key here, allowing for a quick and easy way for people to see what is what at that point in time.

Thinking about this now, I'm getting kind of excited about the idea. The wiki format might actually work out, if it were to just be on a scaled access level, where most content can be changed by invited users, while some content can only be changed by the creator of the content. I used to do a lot of wiki coding, so I could throw it together in a flash with some of my friends.

Sorry, turning this into a thread within a thread. I'll stop now. smile.gif

My fear for the ban hammer is great, and my incapacitated lungs limit my fleeing ability. Edited by Geiseric

Idea:
for the newbie problem, where they don't read the rules and do a lot of faux paus...why not set it in a way such that when they create their account, they have to read the rules. Maybe it automatically redirects them to the rules or they are unable to post until they have viewed the forum rules.

Just a thought

uh huh..and your read the whole "terms of use" when you install new software right? No, like most of us you run the thing to the bottom and click "i agree"
There is not way to MAKE people actually read the rules except give them a mild reminder (to the back of the head) when they mess up to hopefully prompt them to actually read the rules to avoid another reminder.

I'm a complete noob here, but not a noob to the internet. Some people feel that just because they're on a forum, and anonymous, it's their free ticket to be a complete asshat. I read the rules, and they're basically "be civil and don't mention illegal substances." As far as forum etiquette goes, that's the basics of anywhere except for insult forums. Some people just dont GetZ teH InTarwEbZz.

And don't post non-reviews in the review sections...

See some folks DO read. And I'll bet we never have to send Doom on a short vacation either... cool.gif
