what makes a great hookah lounge..

Recommended Posts

Ive only been to a few hookah lounges, and i love the atmosphere of the ones that seem to be more in tune with "etiquette" and old fashion decor. Ive been researching hard about starting a lounge of my own and who better to ask about what makes a lounge great than you guys?
What makes a hookah lounge great in your eyes? What would you like to see more of, or things you think SHOULD be in a lounge. Anything from music, to Ma'assel..

I've actually never been to a lounge.....
Ive been concerned that the experience would be far from relaxing from some I have heard about.
I'm not a big fan of loud music.. or club music for that matter...
What I would look for in a hookah lounge is one a few people could have more privacy.. like booths with partitions......... not isolation... but cozy like.
The music would be at a calm level.......... at a point where it would not deter good conversation.
they gotta serve damn good Chai.

I've never been to a hookah lounge in the states, but from the pictures I've seen of kids partying, I'm not too enthused. I have been to dozens in a line from Cairo, across the Suez into the Sinai to El Arish, then down to Sharm El Sheikh and it's a totally different thing. Most (if not geared toward western tourists) are a social center. Usually the only ones in there are men smoking Zaghloul, Tombak, or XX-apple. The machines are never placed on the tables and alcohol is almost never ever served there. Usually water, tea, or  juice are on the menu. Sometimes music, but mostly the TV. A few places serve food no bigger than a sandwich of some kind, but mostly snacks are all the food found. I loved the concept. Backgammon is played, as well as dominoes, and sometimes chess. One thing I thought was cool was the areas that have rugs and pillows on the floor. I frequented them most often due to a bad back ( the chairs were never comfortable). I remember one place (set up for tourism but frequented by locals of all ages) had the most beautiful murals painted on the wall. I wish I had pictures of that but I wasn't thinking. I was smoking

Good service is number 1, what's worse then sitting for 20 minutes with
a nice hookah sitting in front of you and having no coal. I haven't
been to many lounges but they all played top40 music too loud at some
point in the evening and that really detracted from the experience.

My favorite smoking sessions are at my buddies frat house when we build
make-shift tents and put blankets and pillows underneath them. It's a
great way to meet new people, I always find a nice comradery in sharing
a single hose hookah with people. I would really try to keep a nice
friendly atmosphere with authentic food and drink

I really appreiciate the input, I really like the partition style also, with tables only to hold drinks and snacks, but have the center of attn in the middle of a "pillow pit partition" on the hookah. I also like being able to sit in a circle of friends, but being able to look over my shoulder at other people and not being too far from seperate conversations with other groups of people. Also Mr Bubbles idea of keeping it traditional..... and different from the average lounge, i think, would give it a much needed classy touch that would leave such a destict experince with the smoker. Hopefully one that would make someone want to came back and hangout again. ....i love it

I only went to a lounge once, with some friends in Atlanta.
The music was some industrial techno sh*te and was so loud with so much
bass that the hookah vibrated across the table and the coal kept
falling off.
When we complained to the freakish coke whore with green and purple
hair who brought fresh coals around she said it happened a lot and she
could fix it.

She came back with a piece of foil and a roll of DUCT TAPE !!

First she wrapped the foil around the head, sticking up so the coal
wouldn't fall off, which was okay. . . . Then she proceded to DUCT TAPE
the hookah to the table.

My friend said the building burned to the ground three weeks later. . . . . Hmmmm, I wonder why???
