So I Have This Problem...

Well money's tight right now and I've come to a point where I need to make some descions. I inherited a car recently and I can't decide what to do about it. I'm currently driving a beat to hell Honda CRV with 120K miles that if I sell is worth about $6500, the car gets great gas mileage but it has a potential problem with the suspension that makes me wanna get rid of it before it becomes an issue. Now the car I inherited is a PT Cruiser with only 30k miles on it, only thing is it gets really really crappy gas mileage, but it is worth about $8000. My big thing is I'm not sure if I should keep one of the two cars I already have and sell the other, or sell both and buy something completly new. I like the idea of keeping one car and having some extra money sittin around but I'm not sure if it's the smart thing to do... What do ya'll think?

Lol i figured the answers were gonna look fairly like this, the one thing I forgot to mention about the CRV.... It's on transmission #4, although the one that it's got right now has lasted the longest by far...

Spent some money on learning to drive? 4 Gearboxes in 120Miles?
Christ I'm normally on my original gearbox AND clutch.. sheesh tongue.gif

Ahh yer, Dunno about your side of the pond - But nearly no one drives automatics over here in the UK.

They have a terrible reputation for reliability issues.

+1 on the Saturn (I had one that had 196K and was 12yrs old, still got 33 mpg at trade-in)

And what in the heck are you doing to the poor crv? 4 auto transmissions? wow - my bf is driving a zx2 w/ 135k and it's still got the orginial!

In that note - scrap BOTH and get something newer (but not new)

And stay away from Pontaics - their milage sucks (I'm not liking the 22-28 I'm getting now.... I miss my saturn)

Toyota's are great for an auto transmission, Honda's.... Not so much.... If I sell both cars I'll probably either pick up an Acura Integra or a Acura RSX-S. I'm just scared of making the wrong decision is all...

I wish I knew what the tranny problem was in the CRV. It really is a great car and I love it to death, but I always wonder everytime I drive it if the tranny is just gonna give out today. I bought the CRV with 32K miles on it, lost the first tranny at 41k. THen another at 57k, and another at 72k... My commute is mostly highway miles so it's not like I abuse it in rush hour traffic all day every day. Only really bad thing I did was a bit of offroading, but that's all been since I got Tranny #4 in, so it's not like it affected the other Trannys.

tht is b/c honda has never really replaced your transmission.. they jus bent gears back into place and it is half as strong and it saves the company so much money when they pull that type of bullshit and say they replaced it

edit: i live with a mechanic, he has horror stories about some of the shit that goes on.. and he ends up being the one that has to fix shit the right way with an angry customer b/c the dirty mechanic they took it to in the first place fucked them over Edited by ASUSEAN1

No no, my father and I were both scared of that, we had the work verified every time they replaced the Transmission by our own personal mechanic(who couldn't figure out the problem either). And I would trust my personal mechanic with my life, but we talked Honda into paying for the Transmission and labor every time.

If ur really worried bout gas mileage....get a motorcycle MUWAHAHAHAHAH!!! But no seriously, drop the pt cruiser like the US drops a bomb, quick, fast, and dirty!

Must agree 100%

If you are loosing 2/3 that is usually a toasted shift band. You can't straighten gears, and they are seldom the cause of an auto failing. The killer of autos is heat, or some buffoon using the wrong ATF. Add a cooler, and find a mechanic that is not ripping you off. If they said the gears were bent, bad, or anything other than stripped you just got shafted.

Always, but always get the "old" parts back after a repair. Not to say they were exactly yours, but it helps to not get hosed.


Or keep the PT, but then you need to buy a paper bag, and a razor blade. put the bag on your head when driving, so nobody you know sees you driving that POS, and use the razor to slash your wrists if they do. Hookah.gif

I wish I had gotten shafted on the Trannys, I havent had to pay a dime on any of the trannys other then to have my own mechanic check Honda's work. I think I will end up with selling both the cars. Tryin to find my RSX or Integra, I'd grab a bike but I need to be able to cart around at least 4 people and plus when I get my Hookah Bar open this fall I'll need the space for cartin stuff around to and from the place. Thanks for the advice guys.
