Hookah Trouble

I just got a hookah sent to me from a friend in austria and we hit it for about 20 minutes then the hose started drawing water out of the base, any ideas why? One possible though i had was my friend had hose in backwards as the both ends look fairly similar, one ahs a metal end, which i assumed as the mouth piece, the other doesnt but after awhile water came up the hose. any ideas how to stop this?

filled the base with to much water, only put the water about a 1/2" to 1" above where the stems goes down.

yeah probly too much water, or maybe if you cleaned it first you didnt dry it out well enough.

Yeah it was drawing water all the way through the hose, so filling it too full is most likely the problem? This is my first hookah I have personally owned.

Yep, been there, done that..... usually only takes once before you get the water level right afterwards. I always look at it thinking.... Minimum room for water, maximum room for smoke. Somehow that translates in my mind to the correct water level.

a great way to test the water level is to fill it then suck as hard as you can out of the hose port, if you get water in your mouth pour a little out and try again.

yeah my first time I didnt know how much water, so I filled about 2-3 inches over the stem, didnt take in water because its a long stem, but man oh man it was hard to draw from.

stems are different lengths. personally i like as much water as possible.

so when i get a new hookah ill fill the vase up full of water to where i want it and do a suck test. i suck on the hose port and if i get water in my mouth its too much, then i let some water out and try again. doing this you can figure out exactly where your water line needs to be.

Took a few tries to "perfect" the water level in my hookah...you'll get there. It's nice when you can relate it to a pattern, etc on the base.

any reason why you like alot of water? i see hookahs with a large vase as a waste of water (the round type vases like in this pic ). my regular hookah lounge uses the standard egyptian vases and the round vases..both hold same amount of smoke but the egyptian holds less water.

I fill the hookah to one inch over the little ball on the bottom of the stem. I like to leave as much room for smoke as possible. Good luck.
