Getting to know you through music

Recommended Posts

Hookahs and music cure a bad day for me any time!! I am curious to who else likes to chill out with some smoke and some tunes, and who you listen to.
Personally im a huge fan of TOOL, pink floyd, led zep, and some incubus. these are a few of my favorites.

I totally agree with you. When I'm smoking by myself, I'm either
watching a movie and smoking or just listening to music and browsing
the net while I smoke.

I've tried listening to authentic arabic music while I smoke due to
recomendations from other people here, but it just didn't do it for me.

Most of my favorite artists to listen to while smoking include: The
Expendables, Slightly Stoopid, Jack Johnson and other chill artists.

But if I'm having a party and smoking with a crowd of people, I just
turn on the rap/hip hop. Its sort of a middle ground that everyone can
agree on and enjoy. I am for the most part listening to rap/hip hop all
the time though. But I like all different kinds of music.
I usually shut my light off and just have a few candles going to chill the mood in the room way down.
Ahh this is a great point, thanks for reminding me.

When trying to relax, a good lighting atmosphere really helps a lot
too. I have 2x 48" blacklight bulbs and a single 24" in my room. I turn
the lights off and turn those babies on and its chill central for me :)

The blacklights also affect a lot of my white posters on the wall as
well, so its not as dark as you think it would be, but still very nice.

I was thinking about getting some of that black light paint and
painting some cool designs into my lazy suzzane that I use to put my
hookahs on. Its just a plain piece of wood right now, so I could do
some nifty things ;)

I've smoked to Rob Zombie and a band called The Alter Boys (not The Altar Boys...there is a difference).  The Alter Boys (TAB) are a great band.  I'm not sure what to lable it as, you just have to hear them.
Some songs by TAB I highly suggest getting off their "The Exotic Sounds of The Alter Boys" album:Pigs and PineapplesFamine GhostLittle White LiesWhere Have You GoneBoy In A Bubble  ----> excelent bass line in this oneI See You MovingYesterday Is Here

Music makes the hookah taste better!  I listen to just about anything, but some Bob Marley, his son Ziggy, or Black Uhuru (reggae) gets me in the hookah mood.
Some techno I can totally dig, like trance, soft house, or goa.  I downloaded some sweet live sets from artists like Oakenfold and Andy C that chill well...and go on for hours. Hours.
A friend of mine from Iran hooked me up with some modern arabic music and ethno by groups like Azam Ali, Dead Can Dance, and Okaliin. My favorite song of theirs is http://download1.ampcast.com/AUD-81255-dld...88222-0-0-0-DLD LFQNAJREZTDLJ/Awandayedawandawa.mp3  .  ^_^If it trips, I'm a taker!

Raggae, you say...my friend introduced me to a band called Skindred.  They are a Raggae-metal band.  They kick ass!  I have 22 of their songs an there are only a few one or two I don't like.  If you like raggae and metal, take an earful of them.

oh my god you have no idea, the best music for hoookah by far is

Thievery Corporation and
St. Germain (Saint Germain)

it is, by far the chillest music around,
very euro lounge, relaxed but with intellectually stimulating
undertones to the music (if you get my drift) Makes for good
conversation, especially Thievery Corporation I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that
all of you try out The Mirror Conspiracy, or download the whole album

St. Germain is an acid jazz group from france, actually based not too
far from my apartment. Very chill and jazzy with nice steady beats and
jamming guitar from the streets of paris. Verrrry relaxed, good for
silent nights

If i ever put a little bit of 'spice' in my bowl, you know what i mean
then id have to say pink floyd, sublime, and phish are all great. So is
the terrapin station album by the grateful dead.

Everybody pleeease try Thievery Corporation for your next session! pleeease! it was made for space age hookah smoking.

somehow I thought you'd listen to thievery corporation Lebanese Blonde.

By the way, I like to listen to a hookah mix I put together. I believe
I posted a few of the songs in another topic so I'm not going to rehash
them here. The Wall disc 2 by Pink Floyd works pretty well. I've also
smoked to Smashmouth's Astrolounge CD.

Any electro-lounge or chill out mix is good in my opinion

I usually put on some Mos Def, Common or The Roots ...well lately at
least. My music taste seems to change a lot. In the past I listened to
a lot of trance/dnb, like DJ Tiesto or Dieselboy - which I'm sure would
go great with the hookah.

funny, I generally smoke outside on our "patio" (a few extra tiles past the slab behing our apartment's back door.) and listen to the sound of the wind in the trees, birds, crickets, and of course the semi's and SUV's at the 3 way intersection .1 of a mile from the complex.  I also usualy smoke with friends so we often just talk and smoke.
Thoughother times i listen to everything from tool, techno, trance, middle eastern drums, little feat, floyd, and many of the others mentioned above. Just picked up a new Goa Gil on half.com.
Now that they have shut down many of the p2p file sharing services AGAIN, im boycotting actually buying cd's in the store so new music will be a bit scarce for a while.

Well, im def going to get me some Skindred, and Thievery Corporation so that i can check them out. There are some nights when i like to get into a techno mode, but the techno type od stuff i listen to sounds kind of like the theme song to Nip/Tuck...a great little show if youve never seen it get on the ball!
I like common too, im not ussually into the hiphop but common and a few others like him are nice every once and a while.
Jazz is some great stuff too.. i have the utmost respect for jazz drummers. Anyone oin here play any instruments?? Im a drummer, but since i live in a small duplex i cant play them ive had to move onto guitar, which ive been playing for about 4 years now. I play a little violin too My wife has all the talent... she will tear up and damn piano... thats some sh*t to smoke too....
damnit!!! i typed this whole thing in bold

Jazz? I love jazz, and Acid Jazz is the thing and thats what st. germain is. very soothing. Try these songs by St. Germain (Saint Germain) -

Montego Blay Spleen- great opener
What you think about
La Goutte D'or
Sure thing
So flute
Land of (my favorite)
Dub experience- should be timed when smoke is thickest
Deep in it

Once you get accustomed to these sounds, you can plug in whole albums, like Tourist and Boulevard
. Have one night of St. Germain and you will truly appreciate it. its
less racy then Thievery, good for a quiet gathering of close friends

I was force fed jazz working for Chick Corea for 10 years. We had just
about everybody who ever played in his bands over the years on Stretch
records, and it made sense for artists on Chick's label to record in
his studio. It was a big change from the local Glam/hair bands on the
Sunset Strip to jazz and solo piano. Now I work mostly for private
studios although my home base is a commercial studio.
Most of what I deal with at work in the last few years is hard rock/
punk, which is good to get away from at home. At least its not hip hop.
What little respect I had for the genre evaporated after having to deal
with the artists and hordes of hangers-on.

Now I generally listen to old blues, classic rock, pre '80s jazz, and
bluegrass/country. I think I've been focusing more on novelty lately,
as I've found Hayseed Dixie (a bluegrass band covering AC/DC and other
metal tunes), Chance (a jazz duo with a cellist) and Ondar (Tuvan
throat singer).

For the classics, I go heavy on Clapton, Almman Bros., Janis, Gov't
Mule, Grateful Dead and anything produced by Tom Dowd or George
Massenberg. Queens of the Stone Age has also put out some great back to
basics rock, especially Songs for the Deaf.

Of course, you can't go wrong with The Beatles, old Rolling Stones (Let it Bleed), Tenacious D and Meat Loaf.

For Classical, I've been getting into Gorecki and Shostakovich,
especially played by Nadja Salerno-Sonneburg. Bobby McFerrin has done
some cool stuff with Yo Yo Ma, orchestra, and voicestra. It's a far cry
from Don't Worry, Be Happy.

But half the time when I'm smoking hookah, I'm working at the computer
or the tech bench, so I've got the Tivo churning away for background
noise.

Oops, forgot Pink Floyd in all its incarnations, from Syd Barret to post Waters.

Did you know that Pink Floyd reformed to do the Berlin wall concert and along with the Scorpions OPENED for DAVID HASSELHOFF?

Dave Matthews, OAR, Jack Johnson, Kottonmouth Kings, Chris Cox, Tiesto,
and Deep Dish are on my current hookah mix.  I also have a bunch
of world music, esp. some Arabic and Hindi stuff that is fun to listen
to while you smoke.
