Newbie Needs Help :o

Recommended Posts

Greetings to everyone, this is my first post, I just recently started enjoying Hookah / Nergihle, My parents are from Lebanon with an armenian descent, and I respect hookah as a pleasure and luxury, not something to do for "cool" factor, and such. On to my real question.

I would like to know the proper way to filling the bowl with tobbaco.
I just sprinkle it in without packign it down and I fill it to the top about flesh with the lip of the bowl.
and for the wholes on the foil I put many small ones.

Now the problem is the smoke is harsh, not matter what I try.

I know im doing something wrong becuase the hookahs I have tried at the local arabic style restauarant are very smooth.

Is there a certain way I need to make the coals? certain way to fill the bowl or make the wholes in the foil..

Answer would be really appreciated

once again Thank you! rolleyes.gif

less heat, either move the coal to the outside of the bowl or use less coal. also yo0u maybe putting too little tobacco on there. you could try putting a little more. but flush with the bowl is good.

Well, it sounds like you have too much heat.

What type of coals do you use and how do you arrange them?

The coals im using are the diamante kilo bag finger coals that you have to break, and I put two pieces of 1" each coals on boath ends of the head, none in the middle.

that sounds like a fair lot of coals.

Try 1/2 ing the amount of coal and go from there biggrin.gif

Sounds like the problem I was having. I was making sure the coals don't touch the shisha, but I didn't realize the foil was as hot as the coals and the slightest touch of the foil to the shisha will burn the tobacco and the sugar also. I use the smallest holes possible to avoid this and avoid ash, and I leave about 1/4 to 1/2" of space between the foil and shisha, and now I'm good. I don't think it's so much of a heat issue, but just don't have direct contact. Edited by roadie

its better to overpack a bowl then underpack. every time i put coals on the tin foil i hear a sizzling sound. also sometimes if you leave the coals where they are and dont smoke for a while then you start smoking again the tobacco will be burning. and sometimes when you are smoking you have to move the coals a little bit to regulate the heat. i hope our advise helps.

I never have a problem with the tobacco touching the foil. It's allmost unavoidable and I would not worry about it.

Heat management and getting the heat right is far more, in *MY* opinion, than wether the tobacco is touching the foil.

the bowl I am smoking right now [Fusion tobacco, standard egyptian style bowl] is touching and there is not a hint of burning or harshness.

yea i usually pack my bowl 3/4 full and when i put the coal on the tinfoil it still touches the shisha which has never been a problem...and also throw some ice in your bowl and maybe 3 or 4 altoids mints.....makes for a great clean smoke and the altoids are a really nice touch to....especially if you have mint shisha

take the 1 inch piece and split it in half once its hot, lay the 2 halves on the edges like you are already doing. Should help.

How do you split a coal once it's hot?

I find if you are breaking up a coal break it before its hot. Or take it in the sidewalk and cut it with a knife.

I personally find that overpacking a bowl is fine if you are smoking a tobacco such as Tangiers but for stuff like AF I find it's best to prevent the tin foil from touching the shisha. Every time I've overpacked a bowl of AF and it touches the foil the shisha burns and becomes harsh and also doesn't taste very nice. When I used to use a standard Egyptian bowl that was fairly shallow I found it almost impossible to pack a bowl without the shisha sticking to the foil and burning. I recently bought a glass phunnel bowl from MN Hookah and the best smoke I have ever had was with the bowl about 1/2 to 3/4 full and leaving a good amount of clearance so there was no way the tin foil would touch the shisha. I found this setup needed a little more heat to get smoking well but when it did it was great. I used to find with my old bowl that I'd have to give it a rest for a bit as to prevent the shisha from getting too hot. I used to have to tell my friends to stop smoking for a while to let it cool down but with the phunnel setup I just mentioned that never happens. I found it to be virtually impossible to burn the shisha even after constant aggressive smoking.

I also find with AF its best to avoid the tin foil from touching the shisha. Iv found AF grape and double apple can get harsh more often than the other flavours but the phunnel bowl helps a lot. On the other hand no matter what tobacco your using if you can perfect your heat management your smoking life gets a lot more pleasureable! smile.gif
