ImLow78
Does anyone know if you can get traditional Absinthe in the States and if so where or how? I'm curious to try some.. I have read that it is illegal by the FDA but not the DEA (<-- Or I haven't read that its band by the DEA) so Any help would be great.I had thought about ordering it out of the US but didn't know if it would make it thought Customs? This was where I thought about getting it from but I'm still try'n to read if its the real stuff or not. http://www.originalabsinthe.com/?azx=1232Thanks!Shannon Edited February 1, 2008 by ImLow78
ZenSilk
No, i believe it is illegal here in the states.BUT...You can buy a brew your own kit.... And Wormwood is VERY easy to find.It depends on how you make it, as well. I believe it is illegal to distill alcohol wihtout the proper liscences, etc.OO here you go...http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/absinthe/absinthe_law1.shtml Edited February 1, 2008 by ZenSilk
ImLow78
The more I have read on that page the more I'm less worried about customs due to there shipping. But so far it looks to be the real stuff from Europe. What do you guys think? Is it worth a try. Also anyone who has had this drink please give me your thoughts on it. Thanks for all your help..Shannon
dude3516
I had a few shots of the stuff before, and never "hallucinated" like you hear about or see, and it wasn't the worst tasting stuff but not the greatest eitherbtw. I hear it's the wormwood that makes it illegal, and that you can get pretty much the same thing minus wormwood here in the states. Oggie505
You can get good brands shipped to the US, back in college my roomate got a bottle, and it was of good quality the same stuff he used to drink when he was abrod in europe. Do nto worry about customs, only prob was like shipping was 125 i think, not sure been awhile. But I agree the crap about seeing stuff is way over rated. The only way one will see anything is because oyu are drunk the alc percentage is high as hell. Here is a pic and descp of the one we bought, not sur eif it is the same site thoughAtypical for a Czech absinthe, Trul Absinthium 1792 is heavy on the anise. It has a strong herbal flavor, which is dominated by the anise and wormwood. This absinthe is also an unusual Czech in that it louches to a nice green-white tone when mixed with water. The thujone content in this gem is high, coming in at approx. 28 mg/kg. This item is the 0.7L bottle.
ImLow78
I'm really not looking to drink this to Trip, I just like trying new flavors of alcohol from non-ordinary available (U.S. mind you) places. I'd just like to have some to try out. But Like I stated if I'm going to try something I want it to be the real thing... And thanks for all your help guys! Geiseric
Jesus, 70% by volume? I've never wanted to even try the stuff, sounds kind of gross....
loanshark
It is a very bitter drink and high in alc. that is why you trad. cut it with water.
ImLow78
Well Since I'm snowed in today (hehehe) I have been on a absinthes quest. I'm try'n to find out as much as I can about this drink. If this is compared to Shine (A wonderful drink that my family in MISS. brings up from time to time) which I like very much, I will now defiantly have to try this! absinthes Forums here I come. Texico
Yeah, you're supposed to cut it with water and sugar. There's some really neat looking absinthe sugar spoons out there, too. We spent about a week talking about absinthe and absinthe art in one of my classes last semester. It's crazy stuff, but I hate licorice/anise, so I'd never want to try it. Hell, I can't even drink jagermeister because of the flavor.
dude3516
jagermeister is Gods gift to man, you take that back Texico.....you take that back!
thecoalition
illegal to be sold in the states.you can buy it online and import it.or if you know someone over seas they can get it.my mom was in france for a vacation and she bought me a bottle of the good shit. drank one glass and i was drunk but didn't halucinate. ZenSilk
if you think being drunk is hallucinating, then you hallucinate. Normal people don't though. Wormwood isn't a psychoactive NHT substance.

loanshark
the hallucinating was due to very cheap made poor quality booze back in the day. It was kind of like during Proabition here in the states where people would cut hard shines with nasty cheap stuff like antifreeze or distil it through old radiators just to make a buck and not care what happened to the people drinking it. Gold Wing Gunner
yeah its legal to bring into the US in certain quantities, my dad had a friend who went to like france or something and brought back like 11 bottles, and he gave one to my dad. He said it was really really good and he would love to get ahold of some more.
Texico
I will never take back that statement. I hate all anise flavored liquors except for sambuka (sp?), and the only reason I like sambuka is because of the coffee beans.
ImLow78
I have very fond memory's of jagermeister. on my 2nd date with the wife we was Skinny dipping due to us all drinking this wonderful drink. Instead of the song Tequila Makes her clothes fall off, it was more like jagermeister makes her clothes fall off. LoLShannon

MrMoodz
Lucid Absinthe is a new US made absinthe. http://www.drinklucid.com/I work with an Absinthe connoisseur and he has already bought several bottles. He said in terms of comparing to European Absinthes, it's not the best of the best, but for the price and not having to do international shipping and handling, it's an awesome deal. Lucid can be bought through several US online stores. Also, the alcohol, Arak, is similar to absinthe in taste but is not as complex. I also heard that Arak is about the closest thing to absinthe that is not absinthe. I have a bottle at home and it's quite nice and pretty similar to absinthe (it's a lot cheaper too). One of these days i'll pick up a bottle of Lucid. Tikhman
Tried the stuff, can't force myself to drink it unless its cut with sugar and water, though when it is, its pretty decent.Right now in order to get the real stuff you need to get it imported from the EU and that'll run you $80+ for a bottle because of the shipping.I would guess in a couple of years you would be able to buy decent US absinthehttp://www.wormwoodsociety.org/index.php?o...87&Itemid=
