Breaking Up Coals?

Recommended Posts

I usually just leave the coals full intact, mostly use Golden Coals or 3 kings coals. But I most recently got a phunnel bowl and for that you have to have even heat around the outside so I imagine the best way to do that would be to break up the coals and evenly space them around the centre.

Just curious...

The best way to break up coals, light them first and then use the tongs to break them up into smaller pieces, or should I just Break the coals first and light the pieces seperately.

I have lots of trouble with heat management with my Hookah's because the sessions usually happen when I have parties at my house, and people are unaware of the coal placement rotation, so it only burns properly when I am smoking it and moving the coal around the outside as neccessary.

Any tips would be great.

I don't use quick lights, but I would suggest that you break them before they get started because when they do, they might 'shatter' to more than two pieces upon breaking them. When they are still unready, i would imagine that they would break easier and not shatter.

Thanks for the input, I have broken up coals before when I want them to burn up faster after a session, but have never used part coals to smoke with before.

What are the alternatives to quick lights? Coals you have to preheat for a longer period of time? and do they smoke better? And what are the best brands?

natural coals required some sort of heat source to heat up, as to why there better i personally like them because theres less taste and there stronger and last a bit longer, trade off is some take 10min to heat up ... , i use exoticas, but im sure you give many different brands, gotta find out which one you like the best, i like exotica because the shape.

Wow, I shall have to give those a try. I really just wish there was a shop somewhere in my city. The only place that sells anything Hookah or Shisha related is an adult toy shop. Who knows maybe they might have some good coals. I went there about 2 weeks ago and bought them out of three kings coals. I called and they said they ordered tones more, who knows if they will have natural coals anymore.

*Appologies for not noticing that rule about keeping it legal. I was not fully aware. Sorry if anybody was offended or anything like that, it was not my intention. Edited by mackiain

use your hands beforehand, or after theyre lit stab em im the center with the spike on the end of your tongs. i do that for 3k's sometime. it IS prone to shattering like that tho...

Understandable, I just stocked up pretty good though so no harm in wasting a few....

purchasing shisha online is sorta risky for me because I am in Canada and I just dont wanna get hit with a huge duty charge. But I just ordered a new Hookah and there was tobacco that came with it and they did not charge me any duty. It was a 220 dollar order too....

You should edit your post about something above in post #5 of this thread, and replace it with NH or NHT, better yet, just stay away from the subject all together.

I just break my QL's with my hands before lighting them, that is the best way. Do give natural coals a try, they are much better to use. Edited by Snoopy1966

You are right. I use quick lites, not for much longer (switching to naturals when I get my burner) but yeah, if you light them then crack em, you are gonna burn your rug.

easiest way to break any coal, exotica or quicklight is to either use a very small saw to make a decent size indent, and then just use your hands to break them, or I personally use a serrated knife.

Better yet, you could just use coco-naras. very convenient square pieces, light two and you're good to go.

Also, you could try to get a hold of Neal from devilsplayground.com and see what he can do for shipping charges to Canada. (He sells exoticas at his shop). I know some Canadians posted good things about his shipping and he's just a great guy overall.

I just had a very pleasant session for the first time with my Mya Gyro and it was awesome. I was successful in breaking up the coals but found the smoke to be better if I just put on two mini golden coals and just rotate them around alot (with the phunnel bowl). Thanks for all the tips guys, anything to make the experience better is great!
