Exploding 3 Kings
]great, i just bought a box of goldens. Did you get burnt? i dont want
one to explode on my face and have to get skin graphs and then never be
able to blink again.
Heh, I don't think you have to worry that much ;)

I've never used Goldens, but from the coals I have used and the few
that exploded on me were not that bad. Most of the time the coal busts
apart into little chunks, and little sparks fly everywhere in the air.
The little sparks don't really do any damage to anything, even your
skin, but you just gotta watch for larger flying chunks. Mainly so that
they don't burn holes straight through your carpet.

Other than that, don't worry about coals bursting in your face and
dying..there not that bad. It's mostly just scary when it happends
because it takes you by surprise.

ya, ive had the whole top of a golden explode when i was lighting
it.  besides scaring me and just generally pissing me off, it was
rather neat, hehe.  so....to sum up...exploding coals brought out
every emotion from me, except sadness.

Ive never had one blow up in the sense of a fragmentation type situation....
I did have a Golden throw off an "afterburner" like flame about 8 inches long off the bottom that held for a whole second. This happened mid light.......
Spousal law now requires me to light those outside.

nope...nothing to flare up. I use bulk natural charcoal myself, not fingers, real chunks of tree, and once in a while I get one that smells TERRIBLE when i hit it with the torch..I just ditch it and grab another chunk.
For those who use the finger coals, I have a question. Do any of you experience a bad taste after de-ashing them? The fingers the local place around here uses sometimes give the bowl a NASTY taste after I give the bowl a little shake to knock off the layer of ash and expose the still glowing center.

IN comparison to natural coals...... I would have to say that the fingers put off a different smell.
I've never had a change in taste happen after jacking with the coals tho....
I've used "al-Ahjdad" coals. which must be the same as Nour.... cuz the packaging was the same IE: same graphics on the bag.... fonts and colors  etc...
Currently I am using Sultan Fingers........ which I would say are probably manufactured by the same folks as Nour.. theres no difference that I can tell...... except that this bag of Sultan seems a little harder than the "Nour" ones..... it could be simply a batch difference.

the last coals i had were terrible, not sure of the brand since it was
Egyptian script or something, but they had a picture of flames on the
side of the package.  they didn't explode, but made your house
smell awful, the same smell you get if a coal falls on carpet.

i almost bought japanese coals today, wasn't sure if 96 coals for 12.95 is a good deal or not though.

i usually always try to find 3 kings though since they've always worked best for me, never had one explode though...

Those sound like the Diamante Brand of coals. They tend to smell pretty
bad when lighting them, but once they are fully lit, they are odorless.

All Quicklight coals (Real ones) have an accelerant on them to get the thing going.
From what I have smelled when lighting quicklights when considering my Chem lab days was that they have a pretty basic formula..... simular to regular old "black powder".. theres a slight sulfer smell......... but theres a Potassium Chlorate smell about them instead of Potassium nitrate smell you get with black powder.
Chinese "quick-light" coals are not quick lights. If you are talking about the sticks that break into 4 pieces....... and covered with some sort aluminum paitned "skin", they dont light fast. and they dont burn too clean either.... theres alot of black carbon left behind from them for some reason..... the whiter the ass.... the cleaner the burn.
