Clear Coat To Preserve Design On Base?

So I recently bought a hookah, and it was a beautiful design hand painted on the base. However, it seems like the paint is very very easy to chip off. I was wondering if theres some kind of clear coat of something I can spray on to protect it from chipping that would be non toxic, not affect smoking, cheap, durable, etc. etc. Thanks!

edit: I'm guessing an acrylic clear spray would be the best option. I'm curious though how this would look on a glass surface. Edited February 7, 2008 by bassman65

Good idea... I'm ordering my new hookah in a day or so and would love to preserve it longer. Let us know what you find.
