well goody pants,
the divergence between hardcore and metal has happened a while back and with it we have 2 moshing styles. At good hardcore shows you have the people who are into circle pits and do moves such as gorilla arms and pick up change. they two step and the like.
At metal shows at least here in virginia we get these redneck ass military douches who come out and they just run back and forth pushing people or they walk through the hardcore dancers and just punch aimlessly. The last show I was at I was two stepping to a break down of a song where that is what the entire crowd was to do and some metal asshole came up and decked me in the back of the head and then pushed me. I said....wtf are you doing man? and he goes this is metal im here to fuck people up. so i said oh ok. let it slide and then next song, which was much harder i went right at him wall of death style. so i caught him in the eye and dropped his ass out of the concert. do not fuck with a richmond hardcore kid when YOU are out of place i says.
normally hardcore moshpits are supposed to be people dancing and if someone falls you help them back up and so on. if you hit someone its not supposed to be like...YEA TAKE THAT...its like my bad man and you go on. Unfortunately the turn of hardcore bands gaining bigtime metal crowds .... i blame ozzfest 2005 because they sucked alot of hardcore bands into it. the metal crowds dont do the same style moshing so there is a block and misunderstanding.
that leads to hardcore kids hating pure metal kids and visa versa.

Must be a difference in region. Here in Indiana the metal pits tend to be pretty brutal, but no fists, elbows, knees, or feet get involved intentionally. Also, here the hardcore kids tend to throw fists and feet around a lot even at metal shows (mind you, they're not aimed at anything, but they still hit people).
I've seen older hardcore kids do it too.

Circle pits tend to happen more often in punk shows than in metal or hardcore.

Another thing, if someone goes down in a pit they're expected to get right back up into it on their own. If they don't then people either throw them back in or, if they're obviously hurting, help them to a chair (or an ambulance).

I know what you mean about the militant rednecks though, I live in the southern part of the state. The closer to Kentucky you get the more you see.

I am more into Indie or obscure rock stuff like Brand New and Murder by Death and various other bands that you all may or may not be interested in. But I use to be all about Metal and the likes.

Some great ones that come to mind are:
Benea Reach (Norwegian, inspired by Mushuggah and Mastodon)
Extol (older stuff like "Undecieved" album, also Norwegian)
Becoming the Archetype (Epic feeling)
Alethian
Living Sacrifice (kind of Thrash Metal with additional percussion, just recently got back together)
Training for Utopia (obscure Noise Metal from the 90s)
The Chariot (live sounding recordings, energy filled live show)

I would be curious to hear what you all might think of these bands

I'm the same way now. I used to be almost exclusively a metalhead, but that changed over time.

Nowadays I listen to a lot of different stuff, from trance techno to world music to the rediculous wierd music:

Shpongle, Infected Mushroom, 1200 Micrograms, Primus (and anything else Les Claypool did), The Mars Volta, Garmarna (swedish world music-rock type band), Bela Fleck (and most of his miscellaneous projects), Balkan Beatbox, and Buckethead.

I used to absolutely hate a lot of bands like The Faint, Radiohead, and Modest Mouse, but now not so much. I still can't stomach Modest Mouse's early albums but their newer stuff is pretty good. I've also got a lot of respect for what Radiohead tried to do with their latest album, In Rainbows.

Murder by Death plays in my hometown from time to time. I don't particularly care for them, but they're definitely not bad.

And of course I still listen to Tool, System of a Down, KMFDM, and Rammstein a lot.

I love great produced metal. Metal with meaning. a lot of bans out there are starting to sound the same which is the bad part about the metal scene. A lot of great bands I like include Iced Earth, Maiden, Down (great southern metal for people familiar with that sound) Pantera, Slayer, Superjoint Ritual, Lamb of God (Old LoG), Tool for all of your standard mainstream. I have a lot of other underground style metal too.

I've heard some of Down and I like much. Have you ever heard of "Clutch?"

Check them out. Hard rocking diverse southern blues metal. They can be intense, weird, powerful, slow, or any combination they like. I got to see them at Bonnaroo last year and they put on an amazing high-energy show.

Have you heard their newest album? Check out The Bedlam in Goliath. It's pretty damn good.
