Dirty Hookah?

Recommended Posts

Ok so latetely my sessions have had a bad, sort of burnt taste to them. im packing them how i usually do, didnt change coals or anything.. before i used to get thick flavourful smoke and now the smoke is a bit thinner and theres a weird, burnt flavour. does this mean its time for my hookah to have a bath?

Ya, my Hookah I just retired was about 3 years old and only ever received an extremely thorough cleaning about 5 or 6 times, other than a quick rinse or what not. It stopped smoking as good as it originally did and some sessions just didnt taste quite right. I think in my case it was the hose. You should check that.

This has been the 5th or 6th thread on this topic I have seen lately. For the most part, a dirty hookah WILL NOT cause flavor/smoke issues (and by this I mean the hookah itself, not the water - using the same water over and over will certainly affect your flavor). The key to good flavor and smoke is heat management. Mathuv, I'm sure you did things the same, but honestly, smoking the hookah isnt always about doing the same thing every time. With a few exceptions, the hookah industry is not one where consistency and perfection are real goals: many hookahs are handmade and/or made with less that quality or recycled parts. That same adage can also apply to coals. Every batch of coals, even within the same roll of quicklights, can be different. I know, personally, I have had some coals from the same roll get red hot and some be only warm enough that I thought I could pick them up with my fingers. Putting two havles on your bowl from those two examples I mentioned would give very different results.

What I am saying is that there are many other things to consider/do before you go tossing out your hookah. Try changing your setup in little ways, look at your tobacco and see if it has maybe lost some of the moisture/molasses in the time since you have gotten it, and also, clean your pipe.

Yeah, good cleaning, good heat management is the real key to a good smoke. heat management is something you learn and yep every coal is different you pack it different every time, you gotta be alert and move the coals around so it doesn't burn the shisha.
