St. Goodypants
Advantages to newer Intel Core2 CPUs:High performancegood overclockslarge L2 cache minimizes latency problems.Disadvantages for Intel Core2 CPUs:Low front side bus data transfer compared to the CPU's actual processing power.RAM latency is higher because of the external memory controller.high cost/performance.Advantages to AMD Athlon X2 CPUs:Good FSB data transfer rate because of HyperTransport.Internal memory controller is much more speed effective.low cost/performancedisadvantages:high end AMD CPUs don't usually overclock too well.lower performance than equivalent Intel CPU.more power consumingIf you want to see a good performer compared to Intel quad cores look at the AMD Phenom quad core:http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList....nom+9000+SeriesAMD seems to focus more on lower latency... yet again... Excellent choice on video card. The 8800GT is (in my opinion) the best price/performance pick out there right now. With a SLI motherboard you won't need to do a full upgrade for a while either. You could stick with 2 sticks of RAM for a dual-channel setup. It theoretically doubles memory bandwidth, but you might not see much or any performance increase depending on the motherboard and CPU.All in all, both rigs are good choices. Personally, I'm an AMD person so I'd go with the x2 rig, but it's all up to you. Edited February 12, 2008 by St. Goodypants
EvansLight
See im an AMD person as well, all my computers have been AMD, but i have a friend who has a quad core, and hes a fellow designer, and i love working in photoshop and 3DS Max on his, it is so much smoother. Granted hes got a highly customized linux based computer, running i think 8 gigs of ram and 2 8800GTS cards, but still And yea id love his computer.Im split on the choice between the two, but for now i don't have to decide. I have to wait for the money from my sisters wreck to come in before i get it, but for now i gotta worry about OS. I can't decide if i should get Vista, or if i should buy a new copy of XP Pro. I have had one for years but its a crap copy, the disc is slowly degrading and all new installs with it are showing problems. Plus the key hasn't been valid for ages, so i can install it but i cant do most updates and things online. I really need to try Vista, im my families tech support and as such i need to know how to fix there problems. I dont have a Vista based comp in my house to play on, or this would not be a problem. Hmm decisions, decisions, decisions
St. Goodypants
Like I said, you could definitely stand to check out the phenom quad core CPUs for a new rig.Unless you like the idea of overclocking it to a rediculous level (as I personally do), it will do you nicely for a lower price than the intel CPUs. If you DO like to overclock, go with a core2 quad q6600. Edited February 14, 2008 by St. Goodypants

Oh and even after all thats been said with Vista, i need to get a copy to play with so i can play tech support for my family. More and more im getting calls about Vista, so i need to know what im doing. I will more then likely be making this a multi boot system with a linux distro running along with this and maybe XP pro. I love linux, but alot of what i do i need windows, so i need at least a dual boot. And if you want to see the wish list for this so you can just click links to the parts:https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishli...p+ConfigurationAlso, for the hell of it, i put together the system i really want. 2 versions, one with lots of extras, the other with just the base system.Base Version:https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishli...sktop+RealisticFull Version:https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishli...am+Desktop+Full
