Bad Day At Work

Unrelenting

Recommended Posts

I work at BJ's Wholesale Club, make decent pay, an OK job; with shitty customers.

I don't get it, I'm constantly nice to every customer, EVERY CUSTOMER that comes onto my line. I'll be polite and say, "Hi, how are you today, did you find everything you were looking for?" Some customers respect that and let me finish. Others are like "Hi, how are y--" "HI HERES MY CARD". or "Hi, how are you ---" "K". What the fuck? why are people such assholes to come up chatting at the top of their lungs on their cell phone, then get rude and snotty when I ask for their club card. Sorry, its my job.

Today I was pushing a row of flat-bet carts in, and these are a bitch to manuever when you have about 10. So I was pushing them up, and some lady tries to go through and I dont let her in because I'm still moving fast. She was like "EXCUSE ME IM TRYING TO GO THROUGH" I was like "listin, want to push this? 10 flatbets you CANT TURN?! Theres 3 entrances, go use another" She got a bitchy face at me and said YOUR MANAGER WILL HEAR ABOUT THIS. I was like, ok but shes going to say the same thing I jsut said.

Whenever I do cart's and someone actually puts the cart back in the chorale (cart holder for those who dont know), I say "thank you" because people dont know how ANNOYING it is to take a cart and move it 3 feet to a chorale, when people park right next to it, they say "oh fuck the chorale, thsi car is better" Come on, its rediculous, just because you pay for your membership, doesn't mean you can walk all over us.

Sorry, I had to let this out. anyone in retail will know this, dealing with people is the HARDEST JOB, not easy one bit.

I know what your going through man, I used to work at a grocery store as a casheir and people are the same way. Some couldn't be nicer but others are just set out to be ass holes.

If the pays good than it may be worth staying at the job. My pay was shit so I went and got a job at an animal hospital. Now I'm lined up for vet school and couldn't be happier. Work makes you realize the world has a shit ton of assholes out there.

This is so true. Actually, it is not just the retail world, although I have found that that tends to be the worst. I have worked food service/retail (a major national coffee chain), customer service (library), and the Federal/private business world (consulting firm) and there are jerks everywhere. Retail, however, is particularly bad because people feel so entitled. It is almost as if they get some sort of joy by putting down people who serve them.

I've done food, retail and a music store. Food was HORRIBLE, all asshole people bitching... "Theres not enough cheese on this pizza" ... "Guess what... it comes from a fucking box. You're at a snack bar. PISS OFF!" is what I wanted to say so many times.

Retail was not bad at all, except for the fact the majority of the men who came in were gay (not that I cared) and would ask me "How do I look in this". I'd tell about 10 gay men a day they looked great. I'd throw in the occasional FABULOUS! just for my own laugh later.

You would think a music store would be a joke, and a great time. Hang out, suggest music to people have good conversations, which I had every once in a while, but for the most part people are pissy. The sticker says $12... guess how much it costs? $12! Dont stand there and bitch till I call someone else to come look at the stick and go "Yea... thats $12.."

I try and be as polite as possible when dealing with people. I've done those shit jobs, and appreciate everyone who is doing one now aslong as they're reasonable about it.

Try working as a lunch/dinner server at a Retirement Home!! All these people do is bitch and bitch and bitch! "This foods cold, this soup doesnt taste good, you dont have any strawberry ice cream!?!?" Blah blah blah all day! But.. they are old and i guess they can't help it.. Still very very gay!

This is my third job as a cashier. I used to work at a local Pathmark, which had shitty customers becasue the richest community was only down the road, so they were mad snotty. BJ's is relativly ok, but you still have people that think they know the store better than you.

Since we dont have bags we basically have to pay tetris in the cart, and I was putting things in, and the husband just started grabbing shit out of my hand, I stopped and politely asked him to stop, he was like "maybe if you packed it right I would" I was like "sir, do you work here? Do you know what you're doing? No, you don't, now back off and let me do my job."

I've seen my friend get additude and have a young manager tell the lady "ma'am, with all do respect, go fuck yourself" and walked away.

I worked at a pizza place for two years. I know the hatred of humanity, too. Although, it was usually only the people we saw once and then never again who were the worst. One guy asked for his money back because we broke up the long pieces of spaghetti noodles in order to fit more into the pot to cook and he couldn't twirl them on his fork as a result. wtf? It was even better when we were having all the problems with the e. coli and the spinach. Even though it's all over the news people still complain when they can't get spinach on their pizza. I also didn't like people with a bad sense of humor. One family of regulars was the worst; almost everything they said made me want to punch them.

There are some cool people, though, I've got to admit. One group of regulars would come in for birthdays and leave whatever's left of the cake for the people working that night. Other people would leave beer for us (we were a BYOB place). And the best, one regular brought a TV so those of us working during the Super Bowl last year could watch it in the restaurant.

I've never worked a day of retail in my life, but I try every time I go in, no matter how bad my day's been, to treat those people with respect. No talking on the cell phone and trying to check out (that pisses me off more than anything). No snapping at them, no asking them stupid questions. Just being respectful. Seems that quite a few people have no idea what respect is anymore.

BUT, at the same time I have to say, if you dont like the position you are in, find another job. That's what I did, twice as a matter of fact. I got paid more each time I moved inside the company. At first, I was a simple dock worker, for 1 and a half years. I wanted more and my quality of work and maturity suggested it. I was 19 when I got to service manager. 80% of my days sucked, the other 20% were why I stayed for 6 months. During the last month of that, I ended up asking the maintenance staff manager if they had anything available that I could move into. He said he would talk to me about it and in July of 2006 I started as a maintenance technician. Been there and making bank ever since. Moral of the story? Do your job and do it well for a while. Slog through the bullshit with a smile and keep up on your company's HR website. They are always looking for people. Even if it isnt right now, if you let an opportunity slip up because you havent kept track, that ends up being your fault.

I agree Bulldog.

But it's also a two way street. Sometimes I ask a member of staff something and they can be just as pissy. I've allways tried to be polite and decent to anyone I meet anywhere.

Amazing what a smile and a nice word can do!

I'm afraid it's biblical time! - Do unto others....

And I thank you for being one of the people for sucking up to a cashier even when your day has been bad.

As for a new job goes, I really have no problem with this job, its just the customers. All my managers are young, around my age. So if I'm closing one night I see if anyone wants to do something after work. All the managers are really great, and funny at times. At pathmark you couldnt make a manager smile. Plus, I'm still in HS, its my senior year and I have my 1 year of trade school too. I'm trying to see whats up for option after.

Sorry to say but, if I'm on my cellphone and it's my turn to checkout, I'm not getting off. I'll answer your questions and proceed as fast as I usually would.

You could do your job just fine with almost no interaction with me at all through checkout.

So pretty much I just let people do their jobs, being as passive as possible. Unless talking to me is top priority of your job. And yes, I am what you call anti-social.

My worst experiences so far have been in food. I haven't had that much of the up-close-and-personal to the customers. Back in highschool, I was a busboy at the eat n' park down the street, actually got to b.s. with the regs often, but it was a crap job. Lifeguarding always had dickweed preteens and teens that thought they were the shit, until I gotta outta chair(end of rotation) and forced them on the bench on cold days or threw them out. This past summer was the worst so far...I worked dishroom at the eat n' park here at school. They used and abused me. Once in a while had to deal with people bitchin when I was bussin because the dumbass hostesses would bring them to a table I just started to clean. Ya, that job sucked the life outta me. Fri 5pm-6am Sat, Sat 5pm-6am Sun...that was my primary schedule. I always worked overtime and always got stiffed. Was supposed to have several raises and saw none nor did I get my evaluation raise, so I walked out on a weekend graveyard and never looked back.
Now on campus last semester I did have the close up experience, not the chikfillet part of the job, but The Grill. All the jagoff students coming in at the same time, suckin up everything and then, when I just put new burgers on, because we are burried and they would under staff us, they start bitchin about it takin so long. Some would like to screw with us and order, but when we start makin it, try to make us feel dumb and say we're doin it wrong and that thats not what they wanted/how they wanted it. I decided I will not return to that part of the campus job, if I return. Right now I'm trying to get hired at a pizza shop thats about to open.
Other than that, I've been a painter since I was 13, so I've got a lot of custer issues there...worst I can think of is when we were contracted to half the buildings in downtown Pittsburgh. We were doing a lawfirm and the people were bitchin about the smell and saying its gonna effect their reproductive system and everything else. We ended up only being able to work weekends and the other times we were doing them, we could only work over winter holiday break periods...jobs we could do in a week or two took months because of them.

As for the cell phone thing...that pisses me off too, ran into it at the grill and I refused to serve people.
If I'm on the phone somewhere like a checkout or ordering, I tell whoever is on the phone to hold on until I'm finished transacting, I think that should be universal.

Here's a paradox for you: when I go in with a smile I always get shitty service in retail, if I go in with a scowl and make the people's lives hell I literally get my ass kissed even if I don't buy anything. This sucks though cause I hate to act like that...

I've worked in retail for like, half a year, then graduated from high school and went straight to university. No way I'm going through the typical day working retail crap again.

Eh, it's generally a pretty easy job. The hardest part for me was dealing with the monotony. I've run into a few jerks at every retail job I've worked, but I don't really care if customers are on their cell phones. The only thing that's ever bothered me a bit is open hostility, which is usually pretty easy to shrug off. Right now I'm working part-time at a Starbucks while I'm in school, and it's been a little less monotonous and the people are usually nicer. Edited by Ralleac

well starbucks you have like high class, chill people getting coffee.

Today at work, since we had snow, we had as much as like 30 customers, and i was talking to a friend of mine at the manager(front end/fls) station. and i didnt realize there was customer on my line and she screamed out, IS ANYONE OPEN HERE, THIS ISNT RIGHT BLAH BLAH BLAH.

I was already having a bad day, and that just set me off, there was like 6 other registers open. go somewhere else if in not there for 5 seconds.

I have some randts about customers

when customers come onto your line,s ee you standing at the register end, and ask "are you open", I want to respond "No, I do't even work here i killed the kid that was here, and your next" ugh

When customers whip their chredit cards in your face to can , when theres a reader right next to them... dry.gif

when customers come up with a bigggg cart and ask "do I have to take everythign out?!?!?!" YES DUMB SHIT, WANT TO BUY THEM

I have more...fore later

try my job. first off im part time at geek squad. no not every single best buy has crappy agents (not geeks). My store...although our precinct gets a poor rating (all the comments ive seen are in regards to stuff beyond my control like at our service center), our guys are good. Majority are a+ and net + certified. We got a couple tier 3 wachovia IT people, 1 comp sci va tech grad whos family has money so he only works because hes bored, 1 computer engineer degree holder, and then a speckle of over experienced under paid people like me and 2 other guys. Basically we know our shit, not everything, but alot between all of us.

everyday i answer retarded ass phone calls. Here's some of the typical ones i get every day and they all start the same way:
"Thank you for calling Best Buy Geek Squad this is Rob speaking. How can I help you?"

Jackass responses:
--Hey Ralph can you transfer me to (some other dept.)
--Do you have any wiis?
--What's the phone number for circuit city?
--Do you fix computers?
--Yea I brought in a pc yesterday and wanted to see if its done...yea he told me 4 days but I figured it would be done....uh...its a laptop....why would i know the brand? (Muffled cursing) Uh...its a black one. Its got a screen on it. Yea a dell thats it.
--Well I bought my first computer in 1980. It was a commodore. So (2 hours later) I have this pc i bought yesterday...how do i make these restore discs it wants me to do?
--Yea one of your sales people told me you could set up my network. Can you do that? You mean someone has to come out to do that? 159$!!!! Fuck that I'll just do it myself. Yea ok con artist I know you dont set the prices but its your fault for pissing me off by telling me that anyway.
--Ive been on the phone for 15 mins on hold while you were helping a customer who was actually in the store. I want to talk to your manager.

I could literally go on for hours. Mainly I get complaints on occasion about being rude. My customers either love my service or hate it because if they are nice ill be nice if they are rude i do everything i can to piss them off. For instance, had a guy come in last week. The guy who was supposed to be working with me called out so i was alone for 8 hours on a sunday (new sale day). So guy gets in line while im manhandling 4 customers at a time. Guy is getting pissed making those heavy exhale sounds and tapping his foot loud and clearing his throat. I say, "sir unfortunately i am the only agent but I will be with you as soon as i can. while you wait if you could fill out this form for me and just jot down a quick description of your problem it will help move things along a bit quicker. Thank you for your patience."
So I finish up with the other 4 people in under 10 mins. Go to heavy breather.
"Sorry for that wait sir I thank yo---"
"Listen asshole I just waited in line for 35 minutes while you chatted it up with your friends."
"Um...excuse me? Those were customers...and I don't even know them"
"Yea okay whatever I heard you talking about their jobs and kids with them."
"Uh...(completely baffled and asking is this guy really that dumb?) Sir...Its part of my job to get to know my customers while I offer services and products. Its what best buy calls our complete solution."
"I don't give a fuck what its called. I waited for you for 35 minutes."
"Ok well I apologize for that sir, but it says here on your sheet you filled out that .... um... 'computer's broke' --Could you specify for me?"
"Jesus christ do i need to fix it for you too? It don't work. I give you money and you fix it."
"Ok sir well how bout i just plug it in and start it to see whats going on with it."
"Yea ok"
.....plugs and turns on... "ok sir what you have here looks to be bootlooping. now basically that means your pc isnt loading into windows and from my experience is typically caused by a bad hard drive BUT it can also be caused by a corrupted file system."
"mmhmm"
"well we can definitely take care of this for you. Is the pc under warranty at all?"
"Yep"
"Ok cool, so all of the parts and labor will be covered if its a hard ware issue. If its software however it would be a 130$ charge because that is our standard Operating system service charge."
"WHAT A RIP OFF! I paid $350 for this emachine and 200 for the psp and youre telling me i need to pay 130 for it to get fixed?"
"Well sir unfortunately at the time of your purchase best buy did not offer a service plan that covered software. We just started implementing something into our services like that but its currently only available with laptops. The PSP brochure has all of the exclusions listed in it."
"Ya know what fuck you and your PSP I want your manager"
---------Now I am livid so since I was the most senior person with the store at the moment next to my manager who was already busy--------
"Listen sir, since the moment you came into the store I was very patient with you. Typically I am not nice to customers who treat me liek you currently have. So because of the way you have spoken to me you have two choices: You can take your piece with you and go to another best buy where they will tell you the same "shit" as you have so gracefully put it that I have. OR you can just turn in your pc to me and I will figure out the problem and then call you with the solution. If it costs to fix it I will let you know before I do further work."

so he finally looks at me and just goes well i guess i have no choice. so i check his shitty pc in. Then a day in his hard drive failed like i thought it would. And his memory failed...and his cd rom doesnt work either. So even though I could have done all the work in the store and had it done in maybe a day with all the other work i had. I decided to get revenge and really piss him off by sending it to my service center where it took 5 weeks to get all the parts and get it sent back to him. Then we had to reload the OS anyway. SUCK IT HARD FUCKER.

Wow, thats harsh, but I could imagine. Saw it first hand before and often told the techies how much of a polesmoker the client is.
Sounds like how an outsourced tech job would be(as in a phone techie in India)
I try my hardest to be as nice as possible to those with the jobs where they have to deal with ignorant assholes.

On another note...any idea how to fix the right click on a fairly new wireless mouse?
