Innovative cooling ideas

Recommended Posts

So I was just thinking for a moment on how to cool Hookah's which don't have ice tray's or bells.

There must be some neat ideas for chilling hookah's. Currently, I have
2 that I think could be very neat. Although, the latter might not work
out due to the release of gasses in the vase. Actually, I am preety
certain right now it wouldn't. But I think I have a work around.

Idea 1 - Freezer ice packs, the type that are still gel like when they
are as cold as ice. You could depending on the size of the stem get a
number of them on it going down in length and because it is gell based,
you can cover a larger amount of stem with its chilling factor than any
ice bell could be likely to do. I immagine if you were in a pinch with
gel based ice packs that freeze hard, take the stem apart and tie/strap
them on before placing it in the freezer. I don't think tape would be
very attractive but perhaps some cord would look decent enough for use.

Idea 2 - Dry-ice bath and ice in the base. The way I was thinking would
be to take the already present idea of water and add ice. Now in
addition to this you could add a large spaghetti pot wrapped in a
thermal blanket as an added option. Such as the emergency thermal
blankets for cars. The use here would be to retain the tempature in as
best as possible with out letting it out. Like wise you could do the
same with a small styrofoam chest that has enough room for the neck of
the base to be above the top of the styrofoam chest. This is all off
the top of my head as I envision it. So bear with the following rough
plan set.

Take the empty base or perhaps use the base gromet for tracing a hole
onto the top of the styro chest. Carefully cut this out, remember it is
easier to remove than it is to add on.

Fill the glass base with water and then add ice being careful to keep
the level still consistent for use. Finally place the glass vase in the
chest and place the top of the chest on to make certain it is centered.
Then, add some regular ice cubes to the chest carefully and add water.
I suggest at this point do it where you will be smoking. It will get
harder to move around once you add the water. Get the coals going
outside. Finally, add in a brick or two of dry ice to the bath mixture.
Be careful when handling the dry ice, use thick heavy gloves or tongs.
Do not touch with your fingers. PS... You can even add dry ice chips to
drinks for a neat effect. But again, be careful.

Place the top back on the chest, put the hookah together, pack the bowl
with your choice of tobacco and finally bring in the ready coals. If
this dosn't make a cool experience then I don't know what will. You may
have to poke a hole in the chest to allow the co2 out of the chest from
the dry ice.

Dry ice is available from many shops that deal with welding supplies.
Call and ask if they sell dry ice. Locally I can get 1 or 2 pound
bricks for 2 bucks a piece. Which makes this rather afordable as an
idea. I can't immagine this not being a chilling event. If you want to
have more fun. Use a large black garbage bag in the chest as a liner
and forget the top. It will make the water vapor from the dry ice more
noticeable as it actually makes the water bubble and boil and fog over.

For a most chilling event, combine both ideas. If anyone tries either,
or has tried either of these ideas. Please, say so. I would be giddy to
hear the experiences.

I'm not sure about the physics behind the second idea, but I'm pretty
sure you would end up cracking the vase.  The glass used in most
vases is not tempered or Pyrex, which would lead me to believe that you
would end up being really sad after trying this idea.  Another
thing is that dry ice creates a lot of pressure as it sublimates.

As I mentioned in a previous thread, I have done a seperate ice
chamber, which worked really well. There might be a way to
adapt it to use dry ice.  I will think about this and get back to
you.  I would also like to try and build my own hookah with cooled
tubing - perhaps tubes within pipes of cold water, to get the maximum
surface area chilled.

Hmmmm..... ideas....

not to mention dry ice is fricking COLD! You may want to consider what supercooled air might feel like on your LUNGS. A closed system breathing in super cooled Carbon Dioxide might not be so good for your lung tissue..not to mention what the elevated levels of CO2 levels might do to your blood chemistry...
How about copper line coiled into a cooler of ice water to draw the smoke through? Kind of like a still? Ive seen the opposite done at sca events to HEAT water. Running the coils through a cauldron of Hot water.....
You could just stand in a walk in cooler and smoke....

well wrap 3 layers on a bowl... light the coal and after it stoped smoking put it on the tinfoil... (after you made lots of tiny holes in it) and start to SLOWLY puff puff (if you go big and fast you will end up burning the tobacco and no flavour is going to be present in the smoking session!) so take time easy in the firs 5 minutes of the session.... be patient! and yeas if you made it properly you must have a burst of rich aromatic flavour for about an hour or so! (that flavour is what makes people comeback for more...)
I still maintain that if you want MORE flavour, you want HOT water...
People like cool smoke because it is wasier on their lungs, but think of things this way: when you take a deep breath in winter your lung get cold, when you take a deep breath in summer your lungs don't really feel any change.  Although the hot water might not be the best of things for your hookah.  It will steam and cause condensation in the hose(s) and if you don't have a washable hose, that is a problem.

If you like your water cold this is the best way i have found.

Take a pot from your kitchen that is deep enough to fill with water so
that your base is submerged. Water level should match the water level
inside your base. Now fill the pot with water and ice. If your ice runs
out you can just keep adding ice and you dont have to take your hookah
apart. :)

Thats the way i use but im going to try using hot water tonight. :)
I've been thinking about doing that for a while now, but have never
really gotten to it. I'll report back once done.
