Did anyone else hear about the shooting at Northern Illinois University?

Whats going on?
Why are people shooting each other so much?

Because people are depressed and economy is in a rough state thats my opinion. And also people are crying for attention. It is truly sad that people seek attention like this.

Like every other school shooting, they will find another asshole on psychotropic drugs recklessly prescribed by yet another asshole seeking to put some temporary "band-aid" fix on deep seated mental problems in the first mentioned asshole.

i have a few friends that go to niu and one was in the building next door.

the reasons for the shooting can't be tied to economy these are young kids with mental problems that weren't properly treated. some people break under pressure...who knows..but i pray for all the victims families...and hope everyone is safe..

Psychotropic???

I would have thought of antipsychotic or SSRI antidepressant...
[/smartass]

My sorrow and condolences go to friends and relatives of the victims.

Strange how this keeps happening.
It's almost like it follows a pattern...

Now what we need is the NRA to hold a rally at the university. Make everyone absolutely sure that it isn't guns that kill people.

wow, looks like I'm not the only one here that goes to NIU. I was in the building right next door when it happened and they wouldn't let us out of the building for like a half our, and at the main entrance was one of the guys who got shot. He was lying on the floor and people were crowded around and were wrapping his leg to stop all the bleeding.

Um....it's true. Guns don't kill people, people kill people. A gun just doesn't jump up and put a bullet into someone. A person has to make that decision and then physically pull that trigger.

Very rarely is a crime commited by a person who has a registered gun. (I can pull statistics if you'd like) I highly doubt this kid followed the correct legal channels to get those guns.

It will be a long cold day in hell before my government tells me I have to get rid of my guns. They'll pry them out of my cold dead hands. Because the killers, rapists and thieves aren't going to turn in their guns. They will always have the weapons because they are criminals and they don't care. I'm not going to leave myself defenseless.

Ya know with all the school shooting lately, they still won't allow those with a license to carry, to carry on campus. Its always those with the illegal possesion. I think if that happened here at IUP, there would be a lot less casualities. Its a country town and everyone and their grandmother in the region, has guns. A lot of locals here carry, just not on campus. If they allowed it, I would go out and purchase my own license to carry and have the glock on me at all times.

My condolenses go to out those affected by these events.

As discussed on BBC Radio 2 this morning.

This is the 4th school shooting in a week.

What the fuck is wrong with Americans?

A kid gets stabbed in east London and it's front page news. The Steven Lawrence memorial thing had it's windows broken this week - 2nd slot on the news. People getting dead in the uk is still big news. IE: It don't happen all that much.

What the hell is going on across the pond?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?

KK has a fair point. I have a compromise.

Make guns illegal. Destroy the lot. Instead have a weapon that fires a dart with instant anaesthetic on it that puts the person asleep instantly?

Best of both worlds? Edited by Johnny_D

Yes, a composite bow or crossbow will stop someone much like a gun will... and they're perfectly legal in most areas of the US at least without any sort of permit.(although xbows are illegal in some big cities...I think the reasoning is that being accurate, powerful, and more or less silent makes them too easy to snipe with.)

Plus, if you stick someone with an arrow or a bolt they're gonna have it stuck in them... so you both defend yourself and get to LOL at them for having a foreign object sticking out of their body looking rather awkward.

Australia tried (and still has) an ownership ban. All types of violent crime went up.
Homicides 3% Rapes 8.5%, Armed Robbery 44% (yes, 44) Homicides with firearms up 300%

What the media DOESN"T tell anyone is that to date none (zero, zip) of the shooters have been "un-medicated". We have a society where parents have taken to relying on SSRI drugs to control their kids, rather than using morality, and discipline. We are paying for our addiction to prozac, ritalin, and zoloft in blood! Little boys can't act like little boys in school, or they get medicated out of it, that will screw up a person's mind.

Maybe when they start making some shrinks liable for their prescripts we will see a change.

While all of what you said is true, its just downright insensitive for an organization to hold a rally at a place with such high emotional tension.

Gun control can go both ways. The general consensus in the criminalogical field is that it is too soon, and too contraversial to really know. More exstensive and non-government reported testing should and will have to be done to truly understand. Many of the results reported by the biased and sensationalist media are mis-represented, hand picked, and sometimes outright mis-truth. What we do know, however, is that areas with legalized gun possession do have common disputes escalated to life or death situations much faster, and more often then it does elsewhere.

On the bigger issue, violent crime will always, always be associated with social issues, poverty, life quality, yada yada. Point is, there is a lot of things that have the potential to cause violence.

I want to ask you a question, though, KornKitten. What is the problem with non-lethal protection?

And I have to say, your statement that violent crimes are committed isn't necessarily true, and please, by all means, provide statistics. I'd like to see what you are basing this off of. I didn't feel like pouring of the UCR to look for verification myself, but I have seen stats. in textbooks that say otherwise. Regardless, the UCR can be quite unreliable. Remember that all crime statistics are either pooled through victim interview, or (as in the case of the UCR) based on voluntary police report summaries.

I'm against gun control laws (I'm a libertarian and I actually like shooting guns). I'm also against any organization which would be so insensitive and downright cruel as to do that right after such an incident.

Fuck gun control.
Fuck the militant gun rights nuts.

Please pardon my language you *cough*fu**ers*cough*. huh.gif

I feel like the media portrayal almost fuels the fire. So many of these people are starved for attention and outcasts who do this, and this is their claim to fame so to speak.

I'm not saying the news shouldn't report the news but why does it always have to be overcovered? Yes, its a big deal and I truely feel sorry for those effected but giving these people the publicity and making them infamous is what they want isnt it?
