zeppyrkr
so me and some friends are finally doing what we have always talked about, our own place, found a rather dumpy place connected to a bar (so it will be noisey on the weekends but we are noisey anyways lol); but yeah its nothing to special, kinda scared of the whole commitment though, this one is rather cool with only a 6month lease which isnt that bad but it seems pretty bad ass thinking about hookah all the time and a ton of freedom, should i continue to look into this or wait it off, i suck with money and i spend every dime i have, i want to say i could save up enough but idk ...talked to a few more people and holy crap we may actually do this! mdl
Being roommates with friends can be either very cool or can ruin a friendship. If you're looking to move out with zero savings and you're not good with money I suggest one of two things;1. Don't move out. Rent and Utilities can really suck up your money unless your rent is dirt cheap.2. Get your act together, save some money (at least 3 months rent) and start being responsible with it.Like you said, there is a lot of freedom that comes with moving out but at the same time there are a lot of responsibilities you have to take on.Goodluck! thecoalition
moving out has some underlying costs that people never realize.for instance:Gas in richmond, va not only has a monthly cost based on the amount you use but also has a very large non-refundable deposit plus a connection fee for setting up the bill at a new address. This goes for water sewer trash and electric as well.Rent is pretty easy because the bill is always the same as long as everyone pays on time. I usually try to pay a few days before the rent is actually due and then i slap a deposit date on it so my landlord can only deposit it starting on the first. As far as places go just be careful. Ive been in some dumpy places where the ghetto lord would not fix anything and i had to pay for everything out of pocket. Lucky for me when i showed my lawyer the lease he contacted the landlord who sent me a very big check for "all my troubled expenses and being a good tenant" along with a notice of his cell phone number in case anything were to go bad again.i should have hit the law suit button but since i got paid back it wasnt worth it. zeppyrkr
well the rent is 650 with EVERYTHING included, or so im told, even cable ; any ways its 2 bedroom but were looking to get 3 ppl in there, so about 200 bucks a month? idk sounds pretty sweet to me lol. i have much more research and questions to ask these people and make sure my friends are going to be committed to this. Ralleac
It all depends on how ready you are to handle your money responsibly. I wouldn't room with at least half my friends because I'm 90% sure they'd fall short somewhere at some point and I can't afford to be covering rent on something with two or more bedrooms. I'm also a bit of a neat freak, so that can become an issue as well when people are leaving **** all over the place. I watched four of them renting a 3 bedroom w/ $250/mo ea. and they still couldn't keep it together. They wound up being evicted because two of them weren't working and one moved on to better pastures before **** hit the fan.To move into my one bedroom here I needed about $2,000 total for everything over the first month. $542 rent, $542 security deposit, setting up utilities, food, stocking up on basic necessities, etc... If I could do it again I would've saved up twice that before moving. Edited February 16, 2008 by Ralleac

erufiku
Hell, why not. Just try it - if you're terrible with money now, you'll quickly learn how to manage it. Even if it doesn't work out you get the experience of renting a place (extremely useful before moving to your own place) and the money management part.On my part I could not imagine sharing a place with someone anymore. But I'm a neat freak and have to study heaps.
Sethram
Yeah, you'll learn to live on a budget when you're basically forced to. I've never rented anything but apartments so I'm not sure how this translates to you, but if you're given the chance to sort of inspect the place before hand, do it as ocd as you can. Like with my apartment I'm currently renting, they gave me a sheet with the different rooms on it and told me to list what damages I found. Any small cracks, discolored tiles, worn carpet and all that went on there because I've been fucked over on security deposits before.

Landlords always find something you "broke or messed up" to keep that when you move out.Yes, and especially if you're a college student/very young adult/etc. they like to fuck with you as much as possible. Its def a great experience and you learn to get your shit together, but be wary of who you room with. Even friends can screw you over... Find out all the specifics on deposits, rent and utilities, as well as lease agreements. And if it's you're first time living away from home try not to go ape-shit, just because you don't live at home doesn't mean you should act like an idiot. Anywho, good luck. P.S. You should only move in if the bar has shuffleboard.

zeppyrkr
just a little update for you guys Well finally got to see the place yesterday, its a tad smaller then we hoped and the lady thinks were gay cause we have 3 guys for a 2 room place, one guy opted for the living room which i don't really care about. The kitchen was the only part i really didnt like it was pretty dumpy very old appliances and shit, but overall its not that bad and we found out we have a front lawn, to share with one other person but im sure we'll have the hookah out there in the spring. Now were getting all the furniture together we've been craigslisting and goodwilling all of it so far saving tons of money, we aslo bought tons of air freshener lol. if everything goes right we should be moved in on or around march first, and i'll finally get to keep my hookahs out in the open god am i acting like a little kid or was everyone freaking out before they first moved out, im so freaking excited, ive waited so long for this freedom and lack of food lol. can't wait and i will post pictures. r1v3th3ad
just make sure you take pictures of everything when you move in. And make sure that these pictures are dated, my digicam has that function. Real estate company fucks people royally here. Just have to have that, I had to threaten lawsuit last time with them. zeppyrkr
so the 3rd guy said it was a shit whole and wants to fucking rent some nice place, i dont understand but i really didn't think it was that dumpy i guess i just figure most kids live in dorms which isn't half as nice as this place was, idk so i guess me and the 1 other guy are looking into splitting it which would make it cost 100 more bucks so ill really be fucking poor, god i need to get out of this house i can't stand it. well wish me luck i guess we are going to look at a few other places too but i have a feeling there going to be a lot more professional and harder to get. i mean 3 college guys first apartment ... w/e im so pissed right now.
