Bulldog_916
The heat doesnt melt the silver coating. I used Diamante Japs just fine on the stove and they heated up perfectly.

MechAnt
Pretty much and single burner stove works just fine. Just get something that'll satisfy your needs and you're golden.
Ninjalex
Do any of you guys that live in dorms use the stove to heat up natural coals? I've been considering this so I can smoke in the dorms without the smoke of QL's setting off the smoke detectors. I'm assuming that the natural coals heat slowly and don't smoke. Let me know if I'm way off.

Eifah
I got a solid hot plate, not a coil, and it didn't heat the coals up enough to make them glow, even though the thing was really hot. I had to return it. I guess I'll get a coil burner next time.

HOWEVER the coil burners are amazing, It will light anything in no taime, including Coco Nara AND natural lump coal, which i was surprised that an electric coil burner can cook them all the way through so quickly...my new ally in waging the war on coal convenience...although coconara has already done that for the most part

jfaltous
I've used a solid hotplate for months.. the key to those is to make a Rayver-style cover for it. Take some aluminum foil and make a kind of dome-shaped cover out of it to place over top of the coals while they sit on the hot plate. Make sure there's a hole at the top for some airflow/exhaust too. It still takes about 6-8 minutes to fully light a coal, but it works
shoresidejake
my new toy for lighting coals...and yes... it is BAD ASS.
bolt in blue
I have the same burner that you link to. Only I got mine on clearance at Kroger for $5. Works excellent. I just set it on low (seems to do as good as setting it on high) and the coals are ready by the time I get everything else set up.
