Geiseric
So we don't have a hookah bar, and the people that smoke together are really split up across campus as UMD, and in Duluth in general. So, I thought, why not make a club. I'm tired of smoking with the same people every goddamn day. So, I posted an ad on craigslist, and a few on facebook (under my campus). No one has responded. Anyone else try this (and suceed)? Have pointers?I'm thinking about going city wide, or posting at some of the other campuses on facebook. (BTW, yeah, I hate facebook, I've said as much before, but sometimes its the only damn way to contact people.)
mushrat
well, ive never done it, but i do remember something from my distant college days. You'll need a faculty member to be the Advisor. Then I recall you went to whatever part of the student gov't is in charge of clubs and fill out the forms. At UNC it was a lot easier if your didn't plan on asking for funding for activities. If you just want official recognition as a club it was pretty simple. Advisor and paperwork.
Geiseric
So the real trouble is getting a pro smoking professor. Among all of the professors I have befriended, I can't think of any that are pro smoking. Although, I do have a professor who I helped with her class who is from India, who may have some experience with it, or at least be more likely to endorse it.... mushrat
they don't have to actually Do anything besides put their name on the form. That may help....
Switch
as long as there is no illigal activity it should be fine. At my school there are clubs for absolutly everything, gays, Christians, blacks, jews, anime lovers, sports fans, rock climbing, and hundreds of others. you will probably have to explain hookah but beyond that things should be fine. PhishPhood
I dont know if you would be able to get club status for hookah... Look at those things that got mentioned as clubs.. Generally healthy things. I cant see the school supporting you for smoking. Just my .02 cus I have thought about this on my campus and how cool it would be to start one.. mushrat
Check to see what other clubs may not qualify as "Generally healthy"and point hem out if you get hassled.
Geiseric
We have a cigar club, so I don't think it will be an issue. My big problem now is generating interest...

r1v3th3ad
QUOTE (mushrat @ Feb 21 2008, 10:46 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>build it..they will come... +1as for a reference, try the geoscience professors, they are always up for something. I had a geoscience professor, I think it was geography of the non-western world, that went on to tell us the history as of where a NH device came from. I thought that was weird for a college course, but ya never know. But what I'm saying is, in that department, they are usually willing to help those who are unhelped because they have been there, have had to struggle to get things moving. They're often a ridiculed study, but I feel they should be one of the most respected. So ya, try that department if you can think of anyone... Elky
I actualy have a friend who started a hookah club on his campus, I think it was UCon, but I could be completely wrong. He told me about it before I was even into it, this brought it to mind.
