PhishPhood
Im thinking about buying a used Ibook offa ebay soon. I just want it for notes, internet, music that sort of thing. Maybe to mess aroudn with photoshop a bit too even though I have it on my main comp. I really like how compact they are too Would a G3 be enough power? They're only like 200 on ebay which is pretty cheap. Any input is great. Please refrain from "macs suck"
oolatec
I'd save up for at least a G4 iBook. OSX doesn't run well at all on a G3 (tried it many a time) and you'd only get mad trying to deal with OS9.I have a circa 1999 dual PowerMac G4 450mhz and it's fine for email, jukebox, and basic web browsing... YouTube doesn't run that great on it though. I'd save up some more money for no less than a G4. And honestly, forget about Photoshop on a G3.Good luck! thecoalition
you should take that 200 + shipping and just put it towards a g4 at the minimum.
Oggie505
I have an iBook G3 700Mhz 12 inch, like the smaller laptops, runs fine got it used on ebay 3 years ago, runs OSX 10.4.11 perfectly, only proglem is it cannot upgrade to the new OS, they do nto support eh G3, but no biggie, it runs OSX fine and widgets run perfectly. One thing todo is make sure u max the ram out, has 64Mb internal and buy a 512Mb chip, i got mine from newegg recently, the kingston one. I have been useing a 256Mb chip in it since I bought it, but fiunally added a bigger chip. Get one for 200 is a good deal, just make sure it has an airport card installed this way you have wireless. thecoalition
ouch Mac ram is way too expensive for my blood. my laptop ram only runs 150 for a 2gb chip. and my desktop has 2x1gb sticks of high end dominator that only cost me 200.if they came down on their prices all around i think macs would sell a ton more + accessories. Oggie505
well the whole notion of mac ram is pretty much non-existent anymore, the new ones take normal PC ram, even my iBook took PC-133, the older macs the ones I grew up on had to take specific RAM, that was expensive as hell, but that problem is pretty much gone now. My bosses macbook pro i just upgraded it with DDR 800 i bought on base. But if you buy memory from apple you pay an arm and a leg..lol

But Newegg has RAM that works in Macs too. It's all the same, so long as you select the right speed/etc.

The XMS Dominator sticks are overpriced by a lot.Just thought I'd mention that...I don't much care for macs, but you'll want a G4 at least. thecoalition
i COULD get cheaper ram but when i overclock alot of that cheaper ram cant handle it. some dont like to drop their timings down from the default 5-5-5-15 if thats where they start at. others just cant handle the extra power. ive found that though i pay more for dominator it lasts longer and has the least amount of problems of what i have tried. its kinda like a KM. price for quality.and i saw the mac ram for some notebooks at my store today and talked to the apple guy (wont say i know alot about macs because that would be a lie) and yea he said they realized using regular ram would be more beneficial to the customer though it may take some business away from apple. but thats why they have the ipod. then i got into a heated debate with him over why i thought the zune was a better product than the ipod. and then pissed him off when i took out my ipod and showed him why they arent as good. he called me a hippocrite. i said ebay is the only reason i got the ipod. plus i was weary of the first line of zunes. once that pod dies im going to try a zune. but yea im rambling because i havent eaten in like 24 hours. bye. KvSChad
I had a G3 but the logic board went out and it costs more to fix it than what I paid for it. I googled it and it turns out this is actually a really common problem. So if I were you I would just save up for something a little better. They overclock great and have excellent quality chips. Best part is that it's $70 for 2x1gb sticks.Don't get me wrong, Corsair RAM is great. It's just that I think they are overpriced. St. Goodypants
That sucks. I've never seen any problems with Reaper sticks.
