Smoke Detector Problem

has anyone had smoke detectors go off from smoking hookah, currently i am not living in my dorm room, though ocationally i stay there. But next year i will be living there, and i dont think i can go all the winter months without smoking hookah. the room has a smoke detector in it, and it is connected to the wall, like i can take the battery out but it still has power. So my question is, will hookah smoke set this off, and if so, how do i cover it up

My smoke detector went off the other night, mum came home early and i freaked out and sprayed half a can of deodorant into my room. Never knew smoke detectors react to deodorant =]

plastic bag over smoke detector and a towel under the door and your set. search the forums i think theres a long topic about this already.

It may be different dectectors, but I have smoked in both my different dorm rooms, and never have had a single problem.

i bag the detector but i have forgotten to a couple times and nothing but just tape a bag ove it and you'll be fine i smoke evrday in my dorm and no alarms

I've been around quite a few smoke detectors and theyve never gone off, even when I purposely blew thick clouds into them. But my one friend used to smoke in a dorm setting and he always just took a tupperware container (like a 4"x4" gladware container) and took off the lid, put it around the detector and duct taped it to the ceiling so smoke never got near it. If having the smoke detector go off is a big deal then just take the extra precautions like my friend did and try the tupperware or at the very least a plastic bag and rubber band. And, as Sdzier2 said, a towel under the doorway wouldn't hurt.

yea man i live in a dorm now i do the bag tapped on the smoke detector and town under the door and a fan in the window and one in the middle of the room blowing the smoke at the window

If you bag the detector, make sure not to forget to take it off when you're done. I've never had smokedetectors go off while smoking, once from bbq'in indoors Edited February 27, 2008 by Majid

I was wondering about lighting QL's vs. natural coals in the dorms. Would natural coals on an electric stove smoke as bad as QL's? I had to hold my coals out the window to light them and it smelled awful.

That was my only problem while smoking in the dorms was that the QL's smelled like I just set off tons of fireworks in the room.

lol, my smoke alarm goes off when i open the oven but I can blow shisha smoke right into it and it wont go off. woot.

I also light QLs and Naturals in the kitchen and it wont go off. Guess the smoke doesn't contain enough CO or heat to make it. I also have one damn nice (expensive) smoke detector the apartment complex installed. Edited February 28, 2008 by gr!m

I just bag it, even though it probably wont go off. You don't need to open the windows or towel the door really unless you have really suspicious RA's. Hookah wont set off the Carbon monoxide alarm either unless you light a QL directly under it. My monoxide alarm went off yesterday though cause I threw an ashy coal into my trash bowl, and didn't realize an envelope was in there. Before I knew it, the envelope was smoking and my alarm was beeping. I took care of it quickly, but it shook me up a bit. Other than that I've never had a problem.

A rubber glove works to bag the smoke detector, and then you don't need a rubber band.
At least with the ones around here it works.
