Stupid Question

I'm new to hookah, i have the Mya Diva and I love it. Haven't gotten it to smoke right except for this once but I am unable to recreate it..lol. Anyways I think i'm using too much coal, how do I cut the coal in half? Do i do it before I heat it up or after? Edited February 27, 2008 by neu318

And almost always don't cut it hot - exotica coals just score accross the top and snap. But it is kinda coal-relevant.

Right now i'm using Natural Coals, I also have some insta lights but don't recall the brand right now.

do it before you heat it up. atfer and you'll more than likely burn yourself. All depending on what coals you use this is what i do. take a small sharp object (i use a thumb tack) and make a line of holes down the coal where you want it to break, it creates a weak point on the coal then push the tack all the way through in the middle, it will break it right where you put all the holes. let you know i use quick lights

I'm using a medium clay bowl with Cherry Al-mazari shisha (I think thats how you spell it) I currently use two Natural coals and the smoke is harsh. I think the coals are too big.

yea man try using only one coal first, see how that does. remember heat management too move the coal about every ten minutes around the outter rim of the bowl. how tight do you pack the bowl? also are you using foil and how big are your holes?

I tried one coal first but seemed to take long before i got decent puffs. I don't pack it tight, i loosely place it in the bowl.. I use foil and am using the pick that comes with the tongs to make holes. The pick is kind of thick so the holes are bigger than that of a toothpick. Edited February 27, 2008 by neu318

try and pack it a lil more not too much though. yea it might take a lil bit longer to heat up but its better than burning it all. I genneraly dont use the poker thats on the tongs that comes with the mya. try a tooth pick and do the same amount of holes. the way the holes are is really a personal thing it takes a few trys till you find a pattern that you like and get good smoke with. its all about air flow the more holes the more air but also more heat so that means it can burn faster.

or the coal will explode (experience..) anyways try doubling the foil, changing your bowl packing method, poking smaller holes
