erufiku
So, since I've switched to naturals I've had to figure out my heat management anew. Trying different things with variable success, but today I came across this foil pattern from a German forum: Up till now what I've been doing is poking 20-30 more-or-less evenly spaced small holes on the shole surface of the foil, but the pull is hard at times (I've got a wide hose so that should not be a problem). In the past I just made a bigger hole in the middle and it smoked like a dream but now that I use naturals the mo'assel is burning sometimes...Could you post pics or describe the hole pattern that works for you on non-phunnel bowls? I can't wait to start fully enjoying my sessions again :/edit: posted wrong image. Edited March 5, 2008 by erufiku
HookahDude831
you should probably do a circular pattern and spiral your holes all the way around the bowl....
iamscott06
Yea the spiral thing should work well.I just use the same whole pattern no matter what coals im using..
staygone
Two circles, couple in the center if not a phunnel.-QM
clickhea
those holes look a bit small to me
staygone
Gotta be toothpick sized holes for the ballerest foil ever.-QM
addicted2shisha
With holes such small ul probably end up blocking most of the holes with the natural coals... i use a drawing board pin, or a toothpick not pushed in all the way. Can't go wrong with the spiral hole pattern either...
BDA88
ya, toothpick size and spiral pattern. Small wholes will lead to them closing up when you breathe in. Too big will make it burn to fast and harsh (especially since naturals last a while and are bigger). Just do normal toothpick size holes. if they are bigger, spread them out more
MechAnt
With that setup, it allows for more heat to get in with less heat loss. This is good with a small amount of coal however, there is some speculation that that pattern allows for more CO and CO2 intake.Do this patternlooks like a # sign. Fit it to the bowl. I swear by my life this hole pattern is godly!
erufiku
Mechant: thanks for that, I'll try it out right now.As for the spiral pattern, that's what I used in the past. Should check that out as well - if it works, don't fix it

I swear by my life this hole pattern is godly! How big is this pattern in relation to the bowl? I'll try it out but it seems to concentrate the heat in the center and not on the edges. wouldn't it also trap the heat inside more? (heat rises... so less holes = less room to escape the bowl). MechAnt
Adjust the size so it fits well relative to your bowl. I doubted it at first but it worked extremely well. My guess to why this works so well is that it heats the tobacco and bowl so when you draw air, it'll take in the nice baking tobacco and doesn't allow it to burn much. You notice how if you take too many hits too quickly, it gets harsh? This pattern never does. Try it and see how you like it.
BDA88
will do. thanks for the tip
Bulldog_916
Pin holes all over the foil, spaced by no more than a quarter of an inch either way. You'll be smoking AWESOME.
Voski
mech do you do your holes like that on a phunnel too? I'm guessing you don't do that with Tangiers.
MechAnt
That pattern I use only on standard bowls. Phunnel, typical Tangiers style holes.
