John Stuart Mill
People are overly afraid of polluting their body in modern society. In the past mercury and lead levels were substantially higher, yet retardation and mental ailments are greater today. Napoleon, for instance, had what would be considered a dangerous amount of arsenic in his body. However, people’s arsenic concentration was generally greater in that time. Our bodies are more resilient than many believe. A little smoke, a little rusts are just a little bad.In regard to the recent post about herpes, something like 90% of the population carries the virus. Many simply don’t exhibit symptoms. I’m talking about the generally oral strain denoted as simplex 1, which only causes a few minor symptoms, if any. Now simplex 2 is more virulent in its affects, if contracted below the belt (hopefully not a concern with hookah). We seem to live in a society that embraces fear. We fear disease, terror, chemicals and anything that upsets our notional order. A state of perpetual fear isn’t an admirable nor advisable condition. We should all live a little less cautiously. The vast majority don’t have frequently recurring soars. If you have had a cold soar at any moment in your life you have herpes type 1.

John Stuart Mill
Most people don't realize that Type 1 herpes orally contracted is different from the normal STD type 2. Type 1 can be contracted down bellow as well, but it causes few symptoms. The general STD form type 2 is far more virulent. People seem to confuse the two, and think all herpes is something horrific. A cold soar once or twice in your life is not a fate worse than death. Using it in a fear campaign related to hookah smoking is absurd. They are playing on peoples misunderstanding of herpes. HookahReviews
Well put, they decide to show case Herpes versus the common cold, only because the name is much more intimidating.
austinthecity
The problem in saying something like, "retardation and mental ailments are greater today" is in the diagnosis. I'll use autism for example. Autism rates are higher today than they were 20 years ago, even though we can take some steps to prevent it. However, 20 years ago doctors didn't know what the hell autism was.So just because doctors today can diagnose things a lot more accurately and quickly, it shouldn't be assumed that more sickness is around us. racemyghost
A cold sore indicates herpes, blisters/canker sores in the mouth indicate herpes. Oragel/abreeva will help with the problem.Very well said though.
Cybersist
meh, everyone I know has had either kanker sores or cold sores at least once in their life. Me for instance, I was in 2nd grade when I had a cold sore.

I realize some of the problems inherent to diagnoses. Even the definition of what qualifies as retardation changes through time. I would still contend that mental retardation was not terribly pervasive in the past. Even with the problems mentioned it didn’t seem an epidemic. John Stuart Mill
Concerning rust in a prior post I stated, "many have worked in metal shops their entire lives with little consequence. Obviously, some had subsequent lung trouble, but imagine the duration of their exposure. Occasionally using a rusty hose isn’t going to be detrimental to your health. Your body can dissolve and absorb small quantities of metal."Too add to that, imagine walking through a dust storm. How many minerals do you think I’m in-taking then? Should we advise against that as well? Perhaps, we should just wear gas masks as a new standard piece of clothing.

Johnny_D
Comes down to how society has drastically changed. When I was a kid we used to disappear all day out, Get dirty as hell, mud grime you name it.Never had to see a doctor - didn't know what an anti biotic was until I was probably 16.Today is a whole different kettle of fish Kids are taking antibiotics to a level that has [At least in the uk] Doctor's seriously questioning dispensing practices due to 'super bugs'.Every other kid has ADHD DHS, DHL, UPS & every other name acronym on the planet What gives? As JSM rightly points out - We have turned into a huge society of big girls blouses.JD
