It is as follows a usb Dongle plug in that you use with cable internet and then you call through your computer to any phone in the country or canada unlimited for $20 a year and the dongle is only $46 with shipping.

i was looking at getting this or skype but i still havent decided.
do you get a phone number with magicjack? i mean, how does the outside world contact you? or is it for outgoing calls only?

yes you get a # and you leave your computer on and using cable internet you can have the usb module as a real phone using any hhigh speed connection like a real phone. They only seem to have #'s in large city at the moment.

$20 a year for unlimited phone local and LD I am in.

Later all

My uncle used to use yahoo when he called his girlfriend in england. It was REALLY cheap. I don't really remember how much it was... but it was something crazy cheap like... 10 cents an hour or something.

Dudes, I am sorry to say but Skype sucks and blows if you're calling someone from your computer. Dropped calls all the time, and static in the background. I just signed up for DiscountVOIP.com and it's awesome. You put in your number and the number of the person you want to call and then pick up your phone and wait for a connection. Works on almost all home phones in the world and costs cents wink.gif Not to mention that you can use your ipod touch/psp/iphone/whatever to input the calls and then you don't even have to be in the hotspot anymore.

ok got my magic jack in. Plugged it into my usb port and 2 minutes later up and running I chose a Miami, FL # so all my local friends in miami will have a local # to call me at. And heck for $20 a year for unlimited service what the hell why not.

PS: IF I call you and it is a miami # just remember Don Bubba is the 305 King.

I've had my magic jack for a couple years now and not only does it work, but it works all over the US as well as over seas as long as the party your calling also has a Magic Jack. My friend has a son in the army stationed in Iraq and he bought one for him. They talk all the time... free. The only problem is the son often will have trouble finding an internet connection, but yes... it works.

If your calling within the US it's free anyway, but over seas you can only call another magic jack for free.

Well worth it if you ask me.

Well guys, I used skype over seas and in the states and to be honest it's not that great. Prices are good, but Magic Jacks are better. And magic jack quality calls are much better. Plus you can use a much cheaper phone with magic jack rather than a usb or skype branded phone.

Like I said I had skype for over a year, dropped it, tried magic jack and I'm keeping it, end of story. It even works 99.99% flawless over a wifi connection with a cordless phone. Where as skype was down to about 89% flawless with the same set up.

My brother got one with the same area code as my family. He's going to be in Japan for 3 years. Unlimited local calls baby!

magic jack is a phone. funny that's the last thing I would have expected a computer accessory named "magic jack" to be.

but yea one of my friends have it and it drops calls all the time. also there seems to be sound quality issues (IE I cant hear him when he talks on it. It just sounds garbled.)

altho for what it is (a 20 dollar a year phone service its pretty good.) Edited by Charley

Well the only 'skype' branded thing I bought I refered to was a wifi skype phone i grabbed off ebay for my trip overseas. Beat having to carry my laptop around when I could just pull it out of my pocket at an airport or at the hostel and make a call anywhere in the world.

My point was that usb phones cost more than the average cordless phone, which they do, unless you get a crappy usb phone...then you're the only one to blame.

I tried bluetooth as my skype phone, just not my thing, I used it too much to keep it charged.

But after buying an overpriced macbook, I wouldn't talk too much crap about people spending money needlessly rolleyes.gif

Well you show me a windows machine that can do video editing to the same capacity that mine can and i will show you an over priced computer.

Anyway back to magic jack....I cant recall hearing any negatives of them, but at the same pace i dont personally know anyone using them, only what you guys have said about them so.

Well just a short response: You give me the money for a Mac and I can build a windows/linux machine that can double the power of it. Most premade computers are overpriced, pcs and macs a like. The only difference is, if you can have one custom built (one way or the other) then you've got a great computer for a great price.
So instead of just "picking a color" and letting a corporation do the rest I'd rather pick everything and know that not only did I save money, but I got a better computer.

Back to magic jack after I did a bit of thread jacking lol

My personal recommendation is not to buy magic jack from the company but do it from a store you can get your money back from (radioshack or walmart for example) That way you can try it out, use it a lot for a week or two and see how you like it. IMHO magic jacks still have better call quality than skype. Although it'd be nice to have a magic jack program you can use on mobile phones like skype for a replacement 'home phone' magic jack wins hands down.

Mainly it wins for me because there's not a whole lot of reception to be had at my small university so rather than having to make sure my cell phone is always by the window (and have my bluetooth hooked up) I just have a separate number. And for awhile even set up call forwarding so both phones would ring no matter where I was.

I bought a nice used blackbook off CL the other day for $550. Can you build me a better laptop for that? I need it to be light. Cool?
