Any Help In Identifying Hookah?

Recommended Posts

Hello, My great uncle picked this up in the 1930's in his world travels. I'm fairly certain he was in the Middle East at some point. The hookah stands 31" tall. The ceramic work is beautiful and in excellent condition. There are pictures of a distinguished looking gentleman (military/royalty?) repeated around the top and bottom ceramic pieces. There is a brass bowl on top. I would greatly appreciate if anyone out there could supply any info on the hookah. Thank you very much, Dennis

Very sweet Hookah. also very cool to come across an old pc that will still smoke. I looks like it is one of those Tombac Hookahs where you put the tobacco in the bowl and the coals on top of the tobacco. Not the tobacco we are used to!! I think Mush called it the bowl of death!

That is a sweet piece. Is the stem brass or wood? Is there any one in your family that might still know about it.
Hey SimplexCoda, The stem is wooden, probably turned on a primitive lathe and then carved. Alas, all of my family members have departed, so I can glean no further info. Dennis

being that old, there is no way we can identify it. it was probably hand made by some guy in the middle east and it's probably made out of old china and wood. I would recommend changing the hose and giving it a good cleaning. it looks pretty stanky

I would guess it to be handcrafted. Either way it is gorgeous. It looks like a wooden stem, I'm sure it would look amazing if you put a nice natural wood oil on it to really bring out the natural wood grain. Clean it up and post some pictures, a one of a kind piece like that will be sure to attract some positive comments. Good luck on figuring out it's history.

Hey Canon, I checked it out. I believe you are absolutely correct. Doing a little digging, I found that he was the King and Shah of Persia (Iran) from 1848 until 1896,when he was assasinated. Interestingly he owned the Iranian tobacco industry for a short time. I truly appreciate your help! Cheers, All the Best, Dennis
