dank7oo
I know it sounds like an obvious question but i notice im putting new ones on all the time ... i dont know if its necessary or not (im breaking them in half)
Voski
What brand? I throw new ones on when my smoke is getting thinner. You can use a wind cover to get more heat when your coals are dieing out.
chinamon
i use 3kings and i put on a new coal (or two when im using my funnel bowl) when the coal reaches about the diameter of a nickel.

Bulldog_916
Keep the coals there till you notice a difference in the amount of smoke you're getting. If it starts to drop off, then ash the coals or fire up some new ones.
racemyghost
I use naturals (nours, manara, now exoticas) and i seem to be lighting a new piece every 40mins. Even though they claim to last 1+ hours, its all bullshit. Starts to lose heat in about 35mins.I ash about every 8 minutes or so.
SimplexCoda
I always just add more when the smoke thins out.
cr3am
When there's too much ash and the smoke is getting thin: ash the bowl, move the coals, throw a wind screen on it (if you don't have one, it's easy enough to make... just wrap some tin foil around a pint glass or a Gatorade bottle and put a big hole in the top and some smaller ones around the side near the top). After five to ten minutes of this, it'll be time for another coal... but hey, that's five to ten minutes less coal that you need thus saving you some coals (and money)
