Might Go To Hong Kong In Late May

So I got word from an old friend in AZ that he is making a 2 month trip to Hong Kong, has a place to stay, and wants me to come with. He has housing taken care of, so all I would need to pay for would be food and other living epenses, plus the airplane ticket.

HK doesn't require a visa, so all I would need is a passport, and I have 2 months to get it, so that wouldn't be an issue. At the worst I would have to rush it, which I think runs 200$

I've never traveled overseas though, and HK is a whole new deal on top of that. So I am feeling a little overwhelmed and rushed, and not really sure what to do. I desperatly want to go, and I think I can afford it, but I don't know anyone who has been to HK who I can ask about it.

So have any of you been to HK? What would you tell someone who's out of country experiences are limited to frequent trips to Canada? What unexpected expenses should I look for?

How much should I bring? I should have about 3,000$ by may, the round trip tickets should be a little over a grand, the passpott should be $200 at most, so I will have about $1,800 to bring with... With housing taken care of, is that enough?

BTW I'm not taking my hookah, but I sure as hell am buying some shitty HK hookah to smoke while I am there.

Save yourself 20 dollars and get your passport photo done elsewhere.

I'm not experience myself but I did go to Australia. I thought a Visa credit card allows you to use it anywhere, but you'd have to contact them about your expedition before you use it. So just bring a credit card rather than cash.

And I have no idea how to ration your money.

Ugh, hongers... Good luck, mate.
Have you had much contact with people from Hong Kong?

Don't really see why you want to spend $3000 to go to HK but then again whatever tickles your fancy.

PS: practical tip - don't bring rubbers. honger girls are butt ugly.

I'm more interested in the political climate than the condition of the local females. And I can't afford to stay anywhere in europe. 3 Grand really isn't that bad, either, considerind I blow 20 a year on school.

Cool, I'll ask the guy I work out with about living expenses in HK (he's from there). Although I thought it's pretty expensive compared to other Asian countries...

Shit, its looking like I'm not gonna be able to scrape together enough cash for tickets. Tickets to HK are fucking expensive as hell. $1,600. Yuck. Flying is fucking ridiculous these days.

how do you feel about being adventurous? It also depends on how you feel about the whole HK vibe. do you think you will like it?

you can eat well for $5/meal, $10/meal if you want something fancy. transportation can be done via subway.

$1800 will be enough, food in HK is pretty cheap. You can afford it and have fun with that money.

Food may be cheap, but I seem to remember taxi rides from the airport to hotel to be $200 one way. Thats a hell lot. As much as I enjoy traveling, I would recomend europa over hk anyday. if you can though, its good to get experience. get used to eating seafood...

whats wrong with hongers?

anyway, i was in hong kong in april 2007 for the whole month. i traveled in and out of china on tours and stuff.
transportation in hk is extremely easy especially if you live on hong kong island or tsim sha tsui. get yourself an octopus card (its like a debit card for transit, mcdonalds, 7-11, car park, etc). if you want a good area to go for a drink then i would recommend the area known as LKF (Lan Kwai Fong). its where i went to hang out. many bars and little clubs in that area and pretty much everyone spoke fluent english. food is pretty cheap compared to here (canada).

$1800 to spend in two months in hk? lol that is hardly enough unless you plan on staying in EVERY night and not spending a penny.
you WILL be tempted to do tons of shopping there because shopping and food is EVERYWHERE. you can pretty much go shopping on any random block and find food. it is ridiculous. when i went to hk last year (it was my first time there) i only brought $1000 CAD spending cash because my parents paid for accomodations and food and all tours. i was totally budgeting myself with $1000 for only one month. one of our tours to china (huangshan) cost $1000CAD per person alone. i will be returning to hk next year for another month and bringing at least $3000 for spending this time.

$200 HKD? or USD?
i stayed at the Gold Coast Residences in the New Territories (kinda like a suburb of hong kong) and it was only about $220HKD (it was considered far according to hong kong standards cuz it took nearly 1 hour to get to kowloon with public transit).
$220HKD is not a lot of money btw.

USD from what I heard...

$200 USD in a taxi will take you around hong kong a few times. whoever you know paid that much got totally ripped off or is just an idiot.
HA! fair enough.
So youve been Im sure?
