New Hookah Tastes Bad

Just got a new hookah and everything seems to taste the same. If you smell the hoses, the necks, stems, or the base it smells funny as well. It's really hard to explain the smell/taste. Ive tryed soaking the base in hot dishsoap water, but it doesn't seem to help much.

Alright, thanks. Do you have to "break in" a new hookah? Sorry, this is the first hookah I have owned, and the ones are the smoke shop are really good, but when I come home to smoke mine, it takes like crap pretty much.

you ahve tow ash it before you smoke it. dont use dish soap, that stuffs hard to wash off.

use the stuff mentioned above.. cept sugar.. thats just stupid

alright, how long should I let it soak?

you could use it to wash it. use it like soap. if that makes sense. if you wanna soak it, id say an hour is good, then wash it off and dry it.

Ya my new hookahs have all tasted like plastic or metal. I didn't clean them though I just smoked a few bowls and the taste went away.

Yea, we've had it for a couple weeks now and we smoke about 1 or two times a day. And the taste and smell of everything is not going away. I boiled everything for about ten minutes, then soaked it in viniger for about 30 minues, then boiled it again for about 5..It took clear coat off off the base and the neck. The nasty taste is still there though.

its your hose then. if its washable then wash it, if not then i suggest getting a new hose or smoking mint out of it, that will mask the bad taste.

Let me ask... why are people posting hookah stuff on the Serious Discussions board? I mean, I know this whole site is a hookah forum, but it's split up into the Hookah Discussion Thread, Serious Discussion Thread, General Crap Thread, Trades, etc. This is the serious discussion thread. You know, news, war, politics, religion, crap that people are really adamant about.

Yea, I soaked the hose too. The taste/smell is coming from the whole thing though. The seals, the base,the stems, the hose, and the neck. I have it soaking in lemon juice untill tomorrow. And I'll also go to the store tomorrow and try out a new hose.

Well I don't think it is either. We have tryed the quicklights,the silver coated coals,and the natural wood coals. We have tryed 4 different types of shisha and about 12 different flavors. Also we smoked with the same coals and shisha as we do at the smoke shop and there it tastes great, but again when we bring it home, it sucks. use cold water, makes taste go away more. make sure coal is lit all the way, you arent burning the tobacco.

also try not smoking out of the hose, suck it from the hose port. im really feeling the hose.

We usually put Ice water/juice in the base. Coals are always fully lit. And it tastes bad from start to finish. I will try to smoke out of the port when I get home and update you. If it isn't the hose though, could it be that I am not packing it full enough? Lastnight, I filled it to just below the rim of the bowl. And it still tasted like crap. try sucking it with no heat, just do a dry suck and see how that goes. if it still tastes like crap then its either the hookah or the tobacco, if you smell the tobacco and it smells good then suck it from the bottom of the bowl before you light it and see how it tastes.

if nothing works then narrow down the taste and break teh hookah down as much as you can and suck from each end.

Alright, Thanks. Ill try that a little more thoroughly when I get home. I have tryed it from the hose without any heat and its crap..But I haven't done anything other than that. But the thing is if you smell the base,hose, stem, and seals. They all have that same weird smell. I think the only thing that doesn't have that smell to it is the bowl itself. But I'll try narrowing it down when I get home. Thanks again.

All hookahs smell weird if you ask me. Maybe your using too much heat or packing the bowl wrong

I would agree with you if I were in your position. But when you smell each individual part of the hookah, you can tell that is what you are tasteing. It completely drowns out the shisha(except if you have orange, or lemon flavors). It's really hard to explain it. But I am open for any suggestions.

Also I watched the guy at the smoke shop set up his hookah for us, and it is almost exactly the same way I do it, except he doesn't use ice cold water.

warm water brings out the flavor.. try that.. the reason i thought of cold water is to hide the crappy flavor.

K, The base smells like nothing now(I had it soaking in lemon juice since lastnight). The stem and hoses still have the nasty smell.

Tryed warm water/Didn't make a difference.
Sucked through the bottom of the bowl right after I packed it/tastes fine
Sucked through the port without the hose/still tasted like crap.
Sucked through the stem without heat/tasted like crap.
Sucked through the hose while it was disconnected/tasted like crap.

I smoked once about an hour ago and it wasn't any better. I think Ill let the hoses and the stems soak in lemon juice again tonight. Edited March 25, 2008 by burton_o6

Try soaking it in a backing soda solution (just add a shit ton of backing soda to water). If your hose isn't washable you obviously need a new one if it tastes like crap. When you look threw the stem is it clean or does it look stanky.

I remember looking through the stem and seeing almost like a rusty color. Kind of griddy too.
