BadgerBadger
I was wondering if anyone picks up their coal and gets the ash off it while they smoke. I normally don't but then alot of it falls on the foil. I've noticed that it really doesn't have an effect on the smoke though. Just asking out of curiosity I guess. SupremeOstrich
Not usually necessary when I smoke, but it might be different for quick-lites than it is for naturals.I only use 3kings and Jap-style coals at the moment, and usually it's more trouble than it's worth to ash it. erufiku
I use naturals and ash the coals a few times during a session. I find that the ash acts as an insulator if it gets too thick. Edited March 24, 2008 by erufiku
HarryTheHookaMaster
I usually pick them off the foil and drop them into an old vw hubcap to knock the ash off while smoking...

antouwan
i'll ash them a couple times a session, and reposition them on the foil to get a more even burn. i pick the coal up and for some ash that won't come off i scrape against the crumpled foil on the side of the head. Voski
I ash when its just right. I don't even think about it I can just tell that its time to ash. I usually knock the coals into the tray and blow off the bowl. If for some reason I cant find tongs or I dont want to knock them into the try I just blow on them when they are on the bowl. Codename067
99.9% of my sessions take place in my garage. I have the luxury of blowing on the coals to get rid of all the ash, completely.
racemyghost
I definitely ash my coals. Inside, outside, wherever. I use my hand to cover one side of the bowl and blow towards my hand. That way, the ash ends up on my hand or falls into the coal tray.
sars
I ash the coals every time I rotate them around the bowl. Takes little time and you ensure full heat.

mathuv
its not the ash you should be worried about really, its the embers. you DO NOT want to get a fallen ember into your bowl.. to ash i just usually push the coal off the bowl, take the bowl off carefully so as not to displace any fallen ash and dump the ash in the tray. i scrape off as much ash as possible off the coal.
