Help Iding My New Hookah, And Probably Random Questions

Recommended Posts

I've been smoking for maybe 2-3 months now, and finally broke down and bought myself a hookah from a local smoke shop for $60. I've got a feeling though that it may be a knockoff and would be grateful if someone could help me identify it.

I can post more detailed pictures if it will help. Oh well if it's a knockoff though - It still smokes great. It just doesn't have the best purge design.

Also, just to keep the boards uncluttered I'll probably use this topic for other random questions I have, as I'm pretty new still.

Thanks for all your fast replies and your help. I've gotta mention to my friends to stop buying their pipes from that local store. One of them paid $160+ for this: http://www.global420.com/shop/index.php?productID=148

Oh well, I didn't know how much pipes went for and it seemed decently reasonable at the time, I'll chalk it up to being impatient and wanting a hookah then and now instead of researching into it. Are Sultans actually a "knockoff" hookah, or simply a decently cheap one? I'm trying to be decently careful with it and clean it often, but I probably won't care past 6 months if it breaks. It'll probably turn into a motivation to buy a Mya or something else.

Another quick question, what exactly is a "mod bowl" compared to a "standard" bowl?

i had one of those, minus the anodized stem as my first hookah...i got ripped off more than you did, but i was young and stupid so i don't care much about that.

anyways, it's a decent first smoke, but once you get over the novelty of having your first hookah, you're going to be looking to upgrade...

one more thing, the metal for the downstem is SOFT!!! be careful with it, and never leave the hookah assembled overnight. i did that and ended up with the down stem rusted to the heart of the hookah...eventually broke and there was nothing i could do to make the hookah smokable again.

i had the "nomad" from thehookah.com and its the same thing.

if you take care of it it will last you a while.

i smoked out of mine for maybe a year until the base broke when it fell off a very unstable table.

then i had a great excuse to buy a new hookah!

i paid about the same for mine with the goodies including a case.

you should be set for a while, just dont worry about it now and enjoy with it!

mod bowls are wide and shallow, i dont like them because i cant be arsed to do heat management, i usually use a traditional bowl which is deeper but narrower than a mod bowl and leave the coals in the same place throught the whole session with little problems.

Ah, yeah. I'm smoking right now with a 40mm on it and have to move the coal every 5-10 minutes to keep nice smoke without burning it. I've got a slightly deeper mod bowl with a cage built in that I can just throw a 33mm on broken in half, close the cage, and just mess with the cage to control the heat. I get an even burn through the whole bowl.

any. i've used em all with little to no problems. only problem was the smell of burning shisha (but it didnt taste like burning shisha) but i guess thats from every hookah smoked in an enclosed room

EDIT: I DO move the coals around but not that often, maybe every 15-20 mins just to ash. Edited by mathuv

I get that smell too and don't like it very much, when smoking in my room. Fortunately opening a window alleviates things and I and my friends don't really notice it unless they leave the room and come back.

Okay. I'm just going to keep using this thread compared to starting a bunch of new ones for different questions I'll have.

I've recently moved from screens to foil, and find I like smoking better that way. I've pretty much ditched my cage bowl completely. However, a couple times I've accidentally burned the shisha on top and find it needs to be packed better / I need to pull some of the burned stuff out to get it tasting good again. My question is, does anyone have a decent technique for refoiling a hot bowl? It's a PITA. The best solution would probably be to pack it / burn it right the first time, I'm guessing.

Yes that is the way. BUT, try less heat before you refoil. I've never had to refoil during 1 bowl. If the shisha touches, it shouldnt matter. If you use the correct heat the first time or use less heat if you're burning it, this wont be a problem.

if its too hot, dont take any of the burnt shisha off, let it cool down. take the coal off, blow all the ash off the bowl, take the bowl off and lightly blow upwards through the bottom to get rid of all the smoke. then let it cool down a bit longer, should taste fresh
