Recommended Posts

Pulled out an old hoookah I had from the shed and it's tasting like crap. I did obviously clean it before using it but still tasting nasty. Can you suggest what I can do to make it taste good?

Super cleaing methods or something I don't know...

hmm pics? pics are always nice. anyways if its very old, get a new hose, and scrub out that stem. leave it soaking a couple of hours in some hot water and lemon juice then scrub it out some more. cheap alcohol works well to get rid of smells too, beer, vodka, etc. make sure you wash it out completely.

Clean EVERYTHING!! Scrub stem + vase w/ lemon + baking soda. Flush the hose w/ warm water to get any debris out, then flush that with lemon + hot water + vodka. I personally would let everything soak.

Rinse everything out with hot water.

Let dry.

Smoke.

Odds are it's going to take more than one cleaning session. Here is what I would do.

1. Throw away the hose that was with it and get a new one. Unless it's a genuine washable, it won't be worth the trouble.
2. Fill a bath tub with hot water and baking soda and let the base and stem soak and throw in the grommets if they are still good. Let them soak overnight to 24 hours
3. Fill a little bucket or large glass with 1/4 Lemon Juice and 3/4 Water and let soak through the whole process.
4. Brush out vase and stem with brushes.
5. Repeat step 2 and 4 but with dawn.
6. Repeat step 2 and 4 but with plain hot water.
7. Wash of bowl.
8. Set it up and Light it up, bowl MIGHT have a light lemon flavor the first few bowls, but will fade soon

don't use dawn. especialy not last. dawn will make a soap taste stick to yur hookah, and you'll have to do it all again with the lemon and vinegar

trust me, i just went through this with dawn YESTERDAY!!

There are cleaning solutions available for sale from some of the on-line vendors. "Alcohol", means beer or vodka, sloshing some through the stem will dissolve any minute particles, and also kill any molds. Unless the hose is valuable, you should consider tossing the hose, and purchasing a replacement.

even if the hose is valuable, i'd suggest a new hose anyways. keep the old one around, but smoke through something that's new, clean, and doesn't taste like butthole.

but yeah, lemon juice, baking soda, and hot water will get anything clean. i've currently got my base chilling with a mix in it right now to get some funky flavors out...it's worked well in the past, and will work in the future, so i'm happy.

Still trying to figure out why you guys have so much trouble with Dawn. I mean until i bought a house i had to clean all my dishes with dawn, and metal pans, shakers, silverware nothing ever had a soap taste anywhere. Cleaned my hookah with dawn yesterday from the grommets, to stem to base. Rinsed it out real good and no soap taste. I have been doing that for years, no problems. I don't get what's happening with your hookahs.

I have always used dish soap for regular cleaning, but some lemon juice works wonders. I wouldn't advise soaking it (i.e. submerging the stem). Some pipes are not fully brazed and if you soak it, it iwll trap water in the stem. Just use lemon juice on a brush and that should do it. I do agree with replacing the hose as well. The base could use a brushing too, or throw it in the dishwasher.

1.i put one of my handmade stems in the dishwasher a long time ago, it took forever for the water to finally get out. for almost a month you could hear a little bit of water sloshing around in there.

2.if the base is painted or decorated and you plan on keeping that i would advise against the dishwasher because you'll lose it, if you have one of those short brushes with long soft bristles the base is what it's for. (and it will keep your base decor)

also, my friend had a hookah that he used and then didn't wash for almost a year. i attacked it with a brush and hot water but was extremely unsuccessful. so i aske the people here and then tried the baking soda and lemon juice, nothing has ever cleaned a hookah better. and since my MYAs aren't smooth inside i dont even bother with the brush, i just throw some baking soda w lemon juice and it gets it super clean, with no remaining smell.

i also would very strongly advise getting a new hose, a bad flavor-stained hose can be the source of many a bad sessions.

hope all that helps. Edited by antouwan

Unless it is specifically a washable hose like the nammor/razan, and I am under the impression that most aren't, it's a bad idea because there is a metal coil inside that can rust. Frankly I have no idea why non-washable hoses are even made, I mean, they pick up a flavor over time that taints your hookah sessions and there's nothing you can do about it, not much fun.
