viRus
My friend had a little get together on friday night and 3 of us brought around our hookah's, a few people were scared off by them so to begin with it was only us 3 who were smoking. One of my friends were using quick lights, and I warned him about lighting them, but he started smoking when they were only half lit. 30 minutes later he started shaking really violently and had sweat pouring off him, and he spent the next 2 hours with his head over the toilet. Just to clarifiy, was this from the carbon monoxide? Another friend and I prefer to use bbq coal because it's cheaper, lasts alot longer and seems to provide more heat and a mroe enjoy smoking session. Because they don't have a self lighting agent, is it safe to smoke regardless of how hot they are? Thanks guys!
Voski
QL rules1. LIGHT IT OUTSIDE2. LIGHT IT ALL THE WAYmake sure its completely ashed over the entire coal, so when you blow on any spot it becomes red. I'm pretty sure its because the coals weren't lit. Also some hookahs have "residue" in them from manufacturing that need to be cleaned out, I know my MYA had glue in it or something and when I didn't clean it my heart was pounding like crazy. After I washed it out it was fine.
bassman65
Yeah, QL's give off a ton of CO when being lit, so he probably inhaled it all. I think BBQ coals have something in them that makes it not safe for inhaling.

You can buy natural bulk charcoal made specifically for smoking hookah, which would be safer.Let the coals light completely, QL or not, and stop smoking if you start feeling sick. That's about all you can do. Edited March 30, 2008 by Ralleac
MechAnt
With the BBQ coal, I hope you're using the bulk coal that's just regular mesquite wood with no added chemicals or other shit. The briquettes are extremely dangerous to your health.

I was getting really sick when I first started smoking hookahs. I thought it was mostly from not being used to the nicotine in the shisha. But I think I was guilty of not letting the coals get lit all the way. I'm using Exoticas now and I'm letting them get completely lit (glowing red all over) before I use them. Now I just get that nice buzz going on verses thinking I'm gonna puke and pass out. As far as using BBQ coals, I read about people dying all the time from grilling in closed spaces using them... It's kind of scary to think someone would smoke using them.
Majid
I'm sorry i can't give you a medical explanation but everywhere i've asked people say NEVER USE BBQ COALS. Better safe than sorry. My personal experience is that cheaper quicklights make me nauxious (sp?) a lot more. My best bet would be using natural hookah coals or japanese style coals, and let them ash over a bit before putting on the bowl. And if you have to use QL use 3 kings or Golden. Sauga Hookah Guy
Luckily when I was starting out smoking hookahs I had a buddy who was a pro so he showed me all the in and outs of smokin/setting up a hookah. Anyways there has been a few times however when I have felt sick, and more lightheaded than usual. However I know not to pull while coals are lighting, and the hookah has been used for a few years, cleaned every few weeks or so. Is there anything that could be causing me to feel like that...or maybe It was some other symptom from that day like I was sick, really tired or was really starving hah. Thanks for any imput.
