The "Milk In Hookah" Experiments!

Recommended Posts

I've been smoking hookah on a regular basis for a couple of years now,
and I'm a big fan of blowing huge clouds of thick white smoke (it's a
habit from smoking...other stuff). I've been told by several people
that adding milk to the water chamber will thicken the smoke, and
surely enough it does. Now, anybody who has ever used a straw to blow
bubbles in their milk knows that it produces a lot of bubbles and foam.
The same thing happens when you put milk into a hookah, and
unfortunately there's usually only one place for it to go, and that's
straight up the hose and into your mouth! This is by far the grossest
hookah experience EVER, and it's easily enough to turn somebody off of
hookah for life. The question is, then....how to use milk in the hookah
without it foaming all over the place and spewing out of the hose like
some kind of gross hookah ejaculate?

I searched around Google for some answers to this most pressing issue,
and finding none, decided to experiment on my own and post the results
to somewhere that 1: would hopefully get picked up by Google and found
by somebody else in my predicament, and 2: be of use to the largest
amount of people interested in smoking hookah. Clearly, hookahforum.com
is the place to post such things! I searched through previous postings
in hopes of picking up tips and ideas for my experimenting, and I've
definitely found some things I'd like to try. I'll make a series of
postings regarding my grand experiment, hopefully they'll be of some
use.

So here's the background on my past adventures with adding milk to the hookah...

My first attempt at using milk for thicker smoke was with undiluted
skim milk. What a bad idea. Within no time at all the hose was full of
milk foam, and I was forced to disconnect the hose and blow out the
foam every few minutes, which is definitely the last thing I want to
have to deal with when sitting down for a hookah session. Cleanup was a
pain; I had to wash things out very well to ensure there'd be no rancid
dairy products in my hookah.

The second attempt was also with skim milk, this time mixed with water
in a 1:1 ratio. This likewise resulted in foam going up the hose, and
drove me to give up on using milk for about a year.

My third attempt was tonight, and involved a bit more experimenting
BEFORE the milk even went into the hookah. I figured that if blowing
bubbles into milk makes it foam, perhaps I should try blowing bubbles
though a glass filled with various mixes of milk+whatever. I used
"whole milk" (also known as Vitamin D Milk) mixed in various ratios
with filtered water, and then blew bubbles through them with an
improvised straw made of a rolled-up piece of beer carton (cue MacGyver
theme song) to see how much foam it produced.

Undiluted whole milk resulted in quite a lot of bubbles, and so
obviously this wouldn't do. Next up was whole milk and water at a 1:1
ratio, which also resulted in lots of bubbles. The foaming continued
until about a 1:4 ratio of whole milk to water, at which point there
was noticeably
less foam. I settled upon a 1:5 ratio of whole milk to water for an
actual smoking experiment, just to be on the safe side. After throwing
in some ice cubes, this probably resulted in a 1:7 ratio of whole milk
to water.

After prepping the hookah and lighting the coals, I began to take my
first puffs. If you've ever had a bad "milk in your hookah" experience
before, you might be aware of the very distinct sound that drawing milk
foam up into the hose makes. This sound was not present at all during
my smoke session; and to be sure there was no foam in the hose, I
disconnected it and blew through it into the sink. No foam! My smoke
was reasonably thick, and best of all I didn't get any shisha-milk in
my mouth! This result was what drove me to register and post to this
forum, and I hope it makes for a good starting point for anybody
desiring milky-thick smoke.

Tomorrow I'm going to attempt a true 1:5 whole milk to water ratio, and
I'll let everybody know how it goes. I also have a bunch of cans of
coconut milk sitting in my kitchen (I have a weakness for a good Thai
curry), one of which will be sacrificed in the near future in the name
of science. I also saw Soy Milk and Condensed Milk mentioned in a
previous post, and so those are definitely on the grocery list for next
week. I'll let everybody know how it goes.

I've used milk a lot and had some of the same problems.  UHT milk works quite well while condensed milk bubbles like crazy.

After a lot of experimenting myself, I've found that the best
alternative is to use coffee whitener, or better yet, if you're willing
to spend the money, coconut milk!

Tried some Bailey's flavoured liquid coffee whitener with a mix of caramel and coffee ma'assel and it was like heaven!

All I can say is my smoke is nice and thick as it is thank you very much...
Perhaps a better experiment would be to see if you can adjust things like heat and air flow to get the desired smoke density without blowing bubbles in your hookah...
but thats jusy MY $.02.

try
filling your base to the 'norm' amount of water that you use then take
away a little chunk and then replace that with standard passturgenised
milk - works a treat ! ive never actully had bubbles like the ones you
described...maby i dont put ENOUGH milk in -- o well i still get great
hevenly clowds.

The French Are People Too,

I have been experimenting with milk for the past 6 months or so and
never had experienced the problem you have. My suggestion is don't fill
the liquid level as high, maybe check if your Nargile (hookah) is
sealing properly, otherwise use whole milk and mix it 2/5 milk and 3/5
water and that should hopefully work out. Oh and for those who don't
know about this, try this milk idea along with cherry shisha,
preferrably Romann or Al Waha, to make it taste like Cherry Cheesecake.
It will be one of your best smoke sessions if you can pull it off and
boy is the smoke thick too!

  • 7 years later...

I'd rather see a necro'd thread than the same thread over and over and over and over and over

Yea i used to always ask random questions making threads when i was on a diff, way shittier forum... People would shit a chicken over that. When my time there came to an end and i became a regular here i found out that its better to necro older threads and post in the threads there than remake new threads about something that was already discussed. So The new guy at least did right by that.

How did the soy milk turn out?

(don't make me make another thread about being nice to new people..you won't like it)

Sorry, I was trying to make light of the fact that a milk in base thread had been necroed... Should've approached it a bit differently now in retrospect. I too would prefer a thread be necroed rather than a new one created.

This all said, I've been hookahing it up since 2009 and still only ever use water in my base.

I guess my thoughts are old fashioned in the since I just use water and watch my heat. I mean milk in a neat idea but you forget to wash your hookah wow that smell just well enough said. I just prefer that good ole tap water.
