smidge
im very close to switching to natural coals. So im wondering what kind of coil burners are good for lighting coals? what do you guys use? If you use something else other than a coil burner lets see it!
MechAnt
Any sort of coil burner works extremely well. Anything from Walmart, Walgreens, Target, any where. Shouldn't run you any more than $10-15.
nathan_Choi
What I USED to have/use (but only a couple times, since it somehow has been misplaced for around a year) was just a cheapo electric burner from walmart. I think it was like 15 bucks. Worked like a charm, and didn't mess up the ones on my stove.I've also been wanting to give natural coals a shot again, I'm gonna have to find that burner again... jfaltous
QUOTE (smidge @ Apr 7 2008, 05:57 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Will a "hotplate" work to light exoticas?Yeah, hotplates work as well but they take 2-3 times as long to light them as coil burners. If you do use a hotplate, make a little dome out of tin foil to put over top of the coals and they'll light a lot faster.

Voski
Just an alternative you can also use a blow torch, that way you can light without a power outlet if the situation arises.

teq
I wasn't too happy with coil burners. For one, they take a while to get hot, and then you feel obligated to keep them on. Two, they're designed for pans so you constantly have to balance the coals or find a pretty durable screen.Instead, I bought a propane stove that attaches directly to any propane tank. It was on sale, so I got it and two propane tanks for $10. I've only used one tank over the past six months.

Steemax
Go to wallgreens and pickup a 10 dollar electric burner, cooks huge natural coal chunks real quick at 1000 watts, forgot all the gas and what not, waste of gas by the time you light up the coals and if there is wind good luck getting nice heat to get the coals going, ive experienced both and the electric is the way to go, and its a + that no type of fuel is being used to heat them. nathan_Choi
Finally found my damn electric burner, oh how I missed that thing. But like someone else said, the coil is sometimes too wide and you gotta kinda balance the charcoal on there. Any ideas on how to get around this? austinthecity
coil burners work perfect for me. i use coconara's. just balance it on two coils. for me, (i use the walgreen's burner) i balance up to 4 coals on the outer rings away from the metal vertical things holding up the burner. as long as you put on the coals before you set up, you won't have to wait.for me, it's usuallycoalswater/ice in basebase into stem pack bowlfoil/holesflip coalsset up hookah (hose, etc)coals are rdy
