Hookah Noob Here...quick Question

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,New to the forum and relatively new to this hobby. Recently picked up a Mya Staff single-hose hookah. After I take a draw and cease, a wisp of smoke will flow backwards out of the top of the bowl. I searched the forum but came up empty. Is this is a characteristic of a poor set-up? Thanks in advance.

when the smoke shoots out is it because you are blowing into it? or is it doing it on it's own. If it's doing it on it's own check the Valve next to your hose. Make sure it has a ball bearing in it and some what losen it as you smoke to let some trapped air out than tighting it.

welcome to the forums.
I think its normal for it to do that, if your not blowing it out that is. After all there is shisha in the bowl, that is smoking, and not every bit of the smoke has come through the hose.

Thanks for the prompt replies. I do not blow back into the hose when done taking a draw. Also, the valve next to the hose stem is in the fully-closed position. Maybe that's why...

yea, that valve is supposed to be tight but what happens alot of the time is air will get caught in it, sometimes you will hear a high pitched noise, others you might see smoke realse. what you have to do is take a slow hit, and as your taking the hit just play around with the valve a bit then when it seems right just tighting it up again. Hope that solves your problem smile.gif

It deffenatly normal for it to do that.

I second that. If you understand the concept of hookah drawing ( not pictures rolleyes.gif ) then you will realise that with you pulling it creates low pressure in the vase meaning it has to pull air from somewhere,to even out the pressure difference. In this case, and by every hookah, the air is pulled from the pot, into the stem, into the water, into the hose and finally into your mouth/lungs. now if you pull, the air goes down the stem and pops out the bottom ( bubbling out the bottom) , the thing is once you stop pulling, the air that is halfway down the stem goes back up again or a little bit of it essentially . So that is sort of how you can see it . Also when pulling you pull whatever smoke there is from the coal generally, and once you stop pulling the coal can smoke up a bit, which is probably whats happening , and is in fact totally normal in my opinion.

woa that was longer then expected sorry,

It's normal. When you pull from your hose, too much "suction" can be created, causing the excess air to rush back into the base push the water down slightly and push air and smoke from the downstem up into the bowl and out! ...sorry I am a total nerd. I <3 Physics!

He he he, basic physics at the very least is needed, to actually understand why you get smoke and taste by sucking the pipe

Thanks again for the flood of replies! What sucks is that while washing my bowl after its initial use, I dropped it and busted the stem. I'm gonna try some JB weld to see if it'll hold. That should work until I get around to ordering a super chief.

its a product of smoke in the downstem being blown up through the bowl because of the water rushing back into the stem. btw how much water are you using?

How much of the stem should be submerged? I added some ice to mine and the water level was excessively high. Maybe that's what caused it....

smoke wisps coming out of the bowl are normal.
water level differ based on the base and stem.
do some experimenting with your set up. on my km i can submerge the stem in 3-4inches of water and its fine. 5 pushes it and 6 im sucking water in the hose.
