sensae
Hello, I just got my small tangiers phunnel bowl today and loaded it up with Fumari and threw a 40mm coal on it. When setting up I found something that concerns me slightly though. First of all, the base and interior of the bowl is not even coated and thus is very rough - I'm afraid for my grommet. To make things worse, it's a tight fit on the top of my hookah. I have to put the grommet 1/4th of the way into the bowl, then stick it on.What results is the bowl sitting about an inch above the base of the ash tray (before the long stem even stars) with my grommet sitting exposed. I'm afraid about ashing my coals / setting on the tray and possibly melting my grommet. Has anyone else had this problem? Are there any thinner-walled grommets out there? sensae
Okay, I figured that might be the case. These are shitty pictures but bear with me. Tongs there to show scale. The bowl itself fits snugly enough and doesn't feel like it'll fall off, but the grommet was heating up a bit from a coal sitting next to it. bassman65
its fine, as long as its airtightedit: I believe all funnels are unglazed inside tooedit2: oh I see, put some tin foil around it Edited April 4, 2008 by bassman65
Jeff_T
I'm pretty sure all are unglazed inside. Keep your extra coal elsewhere.
sensae
I don't mind that much about it being unglazed inside. Will tin foil really help it from heating up? Also, the coal in the picture isn't lit, but usually I'll break my 3K in half, light one, and stick it on the tray while I light the other, then the first is completely lit by the time I stick it on the top, wait a few minutes and the second one's lit enough. When I did that the first coal was there for a minute or two and the grommet was definitely suffering ill effects. Where would you guys suggest I keep and place my coals before putting it on the bowl? Ashtrays don't work, I've already had one shatter on me, lol. bassman65
Actually, it might make it heat up more hah! I would just be scared that the coal would touch the grommet and melt it. Since I don't have an actual tray (made one out of cardboard and aluminum foil) I keep my coals in a ceramic bowl that I took from my dining hall or a sheet of tin foil under the hookah. Scoop
dont use foil, just dont put the coals in the tray.
sensae
I'm not going to put the coals in the tray anymore - Kind of defeats the purpose of the tray though, doesn't it? I guess I can still use it to ash. I need to figure out something else to use that's tray-like separate from the hookah though. Any suggestions? Bulldog_916
Dont worry about the grommet, the coal wont touch it as long as you drop the coal in the tray. I've never once had a problem with coal touching grommet. Not once. Be careful about it and it wont be a problem.
sensae
I may have a shitty grommet, but I lit a coal and let it sit in the tray (as far away from the grommet as it can be) for maybe 2 minutes, I come back and the grommet is starting to give off a little bit of smoke. It doesn't seem to be a problem when ashing though.
Bulldog_916
Just ash it in the tray. There are these tin foil based containers that hardware stores sell for Webber grills that act as grease catchers. That's what I use for coals that have been spent.
erufiku
Get something to ash/keep your coals on. The 'candle holder' from Ikea that I got for .99 works well.
