erufiku
Could someone help me get Tangiers smoking in non-phunnel bowls? I'm using a MYA standard bowl with Coconaras. Pics of your setup great appreciated: packing, foil holes, as well as amount of coal. Thanks!

nathan_Choi
Why is it that you have to pack Tangiers down so much? Doesnt that mess up airflow?

erufiku
OK thanks Canon I'll try to pack it down hardcore next time. In the meantime, if anyone has pics of their setup...
Sonthert
Here's my suggestion. Pretend you're packing a phunnel bowl...instead of the tobacco mass being toroidal (donut shaped), you have a center, which s packed a little lighter than a phunnel. So, good density on the sides, a little lighter in the center. We smoked Tangiers for years without phunnels. The phunnels have only been out for like 2 1/2 years or so, but I've been making tobacco for 7 years....
Deathwish238
I've been trying to get Tangiers to smoke well. I have whatever bowl comes with an Egyptian Hookah from Hookah-Shisha...it seems to be wider than most bowls that I've seen(only experience is local hookah bars). Today I experimented by packing it tightly(juice squeezing out) and making two almost pinky sized holes over two of the air ways. It seemed to work alright and it was tastier and less harsh than packing it loosely, but I couldn't get the smoke to be very thick. 28" Egyptian Hookah with about 20 ice cubes in the basin filled with water about an inch above the bottom of the stem.Any ideas to get thicker smoke? I'll try making one hole in the center tomorrow and see how that works. Exotica coals is what I use and have been using 2 1/4 sticks on opposite sides.Another issue...I'm smoking Spearmint Tangiers and I was expecting a stronger buzz than I have been getting. I get a light mellow buzz that lasts maybe 20 min and I didn't get another one during the rest of the 3 hour session. Any ideas for getting a better buzz?Don't mean to threadjack but I didn't see the need to create a new thread with a similar title Edited April 6, 2008 by Deathwish238
Canon
more heat (windcover/another coal) but once it gets going you have to lower the heat so you dont burn it
Deathwish238
Making a "punnel" out of aluminum foil yielded a lot more and a lot thicker smoke after about 20 min of use. Very happy atm...although it doesn't taste as good...but it does smell nice
EternalSoil
only use one pinky sized hole with the same heat.go too much air going through...
erufiku
Thanks everyone!Just had a pretty good session with Tangiers Cocoa. Set up a standard MYA bowl with a hole in the middle, and used two coconaras to get it going. I guess three's the charm, cause it didn't rape my throat this time around Also, I got a bit of a buzz but nowhere near the train-wrecking, i-can't-stand buzz that some people described.Just one question - what makes it go harsh? I packed it v. tight, so I'm guessing too much heat? When the coals dwindled down a bit the harshness went away...
Bulldog_916
Put the coals on the very edge of the bowl, a little bit hanging off. Too much heat would be the culprit for sure.

Wonder how that will work out.
Bulldog_916
This is why I like exoticas and other natural fingers, you can cut em as small as you want. With the cocos, they are already a pre-defined size and you cant really change it. I dont know why the smoke is harsh for you. If you packed it like a normal bowl, it shouldnt be too much of a problem. I smoked Layalina and Starbuzz in my phunnel without a problem. I guess my only other suggestions are to acclimate your unwashed shisha, or stir the washed stuff really well and pack it even with the top of the bowl. Weird.
