kungfujoe
So, I'm trying to figure out just how hot a three kings charcoal burns.Hell, I'd be happy to know how hot any charcoal gets for that matter.Obviously it depends on how big the charcoal is, but if someone could at least ballpark it for me, I'd be pleased. Venzor
See if you can get a hold of one of those laser thermometers, they're used a lot in food service. Measure when idle and when puffing.

gaia.plateau
My torch burns at 3000 degrees... a fallen Golden coal burns my carpet at about 1/8th the rate of my torch. Therefore it is about 350 degrees?I am aware that this post is meaningless, indulge me.

chromecarz00
cigs burn at Temperature without drawing:Side of the lit portion: 400 deg C (or 752 deg F)Middle of the lit portion: 580 deg C (or 1112 deg F)Temperature during drawing:Middle of the lit portion: 700 deg C (or 1292 deg F)cigs are much harsher than shisha... Canon
but the coals arent directly touching the shisha, also the fact that the shisha is wet/moist and in a clump means that it would burn at a higher temperature then cigs which are dry and relativity small

gaia.plateau
I'd be interested to see a wide range of Exotica tests, to see if I'm crazy or not.Sometimes I end up needing 4 quarters for a phunnel bowl, other times 2 quarters burns the shit out of it. Same brand/set up.

Stealth
I was doing temp readings throughout the hookah a while ago with a cheap little temperature probe of mine. Most of the temps I tested it at seemed acurate when I knew what the temperature was supposed to be. For the coals I got a temp of about 460*c. Keep in mind that is with the probe pushed into the red hot coal, not the dusty serface. The temperatures I was getting directly under the aluminum inside the bowl was randing from about 180-230c. aldonb1
As for the foil, shisha, bowl outlet and hose temperatures refer to this study page 5:http://webfea-lb.fea.aub.edu.lb/aerosol/do...gilehpaper1.pdfThis is also a very good study for those of y'all who haven't stumbled upon it yet.~ab

jordanneff
The most official thing I could find was on wood charcoal, which is closest to what we use for hookah, or at least closer than bbq coals. Anyway, apparently "according to J. Percy, wood becomes brown at 220 °C, a deep brown-black after some time at 280°, and an easily powdered mass at 310°"Those are in degrees celsius, so if you're talking F, when first lit they're about 536°F, start to ash (sitting temp) around 600°F, and I'd imagine would at least go up to 800-1000°F+ while inhaling. Unfortunately I got rejected for funding this semester on my hookah NFDPM mass spec study =(. Oh well... try again next semester. And as for burning hands. I've actually gotten to the point where i can move coals (Doing it VERY quickly) with my fingers. Guitar calluses + a little saliva ftw.~ab Edited April 6, 2008 by aldonb1
kungfujoe
Wow.Yay teamwork. Thanks for all the replies. I feel adequately edumacated. Yeah, I could have told you it was hot. You should see my fiance's carpet, burn holes everywhere. She's mercifully complacent with this situation though, so yay me.
