sensae
I have access to a metal shop and wanted to throw together a quick and easy Scalli mod for my new Tangiers small phunnel. Would stainless steel be safe for this? The metal safety posts I've found all revolve around copper. I'm figuring so, but thought I'd get some opinions. Canon
your fine using stainless steel, its what alot of hookahs are made of and the screens that people use instead of tin foil.
gaia.plateau
Wouldn't copper be much, much easier to mold into the proper shape than steel?Or is still all you have on hand? I think that just about any material would work.
Johnny_D
I've moved this to the general discussion area - it will get more visibility. This area is more for how people actually done things.I'd use copper. the original was copper and there has been numerous copper related discussions. Have a search of copper and health.JD
teq
I'd hate to risk it with copper. If you have access to a metal shop, there's probably a mill there. I would use aluminum and make an insert that would not only fit over the phunnel's hole, but also the bottom of the bowl. Create a few preforations in the bottom, close to the edge of the bowl, and the air will distribute evenly throughout the shisha.
thomas
Hey while youre there, can you make me an addon to attach to the down stem of a mya? I want hte down stem to be longer by like 3-5 inches. Do you need the dimensions?

A diffuser might work, depending on what kind of DIY model he used... a proper diffuser wears out after so many smokes, would only be a band-aid solution. Of course the easiest thing to do would be to simply order a replacement stem, a longer one, any model will work, from the nearest hookah vendor. They're like, $3-5. Nonsense. The size of the chamber doesn't affect how much smoke you're able to inhale. The glycerin boils when you go to take a hit, thus the smoke in the chamber is just replaced by more smoke. Sariél
For a longer downstem, just get some tubing from your local Home Depot and fit it over the existing downstem, and cut to length. Take the stem with you to the store to ensure proper sizing.

Either get a couple of buddies together or smoke really, really rapidly for a minute or so, you can definitely "expend" the smoke in the chamber, necessitating shallower, slower inhales. I don't know how long it takes for smoke to travel through the water, but yeah, a bigger chamber will increase smokeability.

gaia.plateau
Saves shisha, more evenly distributes heat, avoids having to make a hole in the center which means that more heat is going through the shisha, rather than getting hot air straight into the stem. I used to use a mod though don't get me wrong. I just lost it and started packing without it and it made no difference from what I can tell. Plus I can get more tobacco into the bowl which means 4+ hour bowls of AF.

I don't know how long it takes for smoke to travel through the water, but yeah, a bigger chamber will increase smokeability. When you inhale, there is a pressure drop in the chamber, forcing smoke to come down the stem. If there's less smoke in the chamber, it's not due to the size of the chamber, but rather the amount of smoke being produced. If there isn't smoke in the chamber, then there must be oxygen instead. Since the only two ways oxygen can enter the chamber are by A:Blowing through the hose or B: Sucking it down through the bowl, that has to tell you that you ran out of glycerin to boil.QUOTE But reduces the smoke's ability to cool down between hits. Most people fill their chamber up to the point where the stem is submerged about half an inch, regardless of the size of the chamber or length of the stem. The smoke is cooled by how much of a substance with a variable temperature it comes in contact with... something that can easily be adjusted by the methods I mentioned above. As far as the Scalli mod is concerned, I'm surprised no one has thought to take a file and grind down the phunnel's hole in a couple places. Problem solved. Edited April 8, 2008 by teq
