Shifty
Just thought I'd share my initial experience with these "amazing" coals. Normally I don't fall victim to "the hype" of anything, but I figured with more than 1-2 people giving these things props, I felt it was my hookah duty to give these a shot.Lit up my first try of exoticas last night to smoke with the remaining pink lemonade I have. My whole room smelled chemically afterwards. I had to open windows and turn the fan on. I don't "think" the coals imparted any flavor difference to the shisha, but then again, I had such a huge head buzz I could have been smoking Styrofoam and wouldn't have known the difference. So, I'll be giving these another go, but if the same deal happens, I may have a box of exoticas to sell to someone for a few bucks. I'll keep my Coconaras and other finger coals. Snoopy1966
Coconaras all the way for me now. I bought 5 boxes yesterday of the 16 pc and 5 boxes of 84 pc. I will wait and see what happens with Exoticas. I do like them, but my luck has not been good. Canon can testify to that one. I do not blame any one for this, it is just very random right now. The good coals are great, so I will keep trying.

Shifty
Smell while lighting is to be expected. This was after my session was about 30-40 minutes in.

I threw them away before I left and I finished off the box I got from you on the last day there.
ganesha
I like the Exoticas up until a day ago... I've only bought one box and the first half of the box were great. The second half though I've had nothing but issues with. (I'm writing it off to them possibly being a a part of the damaged batch.) Mushrat turned me onto Belgian natural disks and so far I like them a lot. they're a little pricey but other than that they are great.

ZenSilk
Are these the "new" Exoticas? Are those ever coming? And if you have gotten bad Exoticas, join the club.
mathuv
well the only exoticas ive ever used where good. (thanks again snoopy!) and i never had any issues with smell. although they did sometimes split when ashing but that can be expected from any coal i guess. they only had a VERY faint smell whilst lighting (i had to hold my nose to the coals) and yes, i do admit they smelled chemically but nothing major, i couldnt smell them from 2ft away. racemyghost
did you light the coals indoor? And ive had not but great success with my exoticas. I just wish they didnt take as long to light.
rezaomar
that happened to me. its not the coals. When you think the coals are done, leave them on 2 or 3 minutes longer, the inside isnt hot enough yet so when you takea hit your taking in unlit coal smoke. Leave them on the stove longer and you wont have that problem anymore
Voski
For the belgian disks make sure you don't mistake them for the QL ones. The QL ones are just as bad as rolland QL.
thecoalition
exoticas have never failed me and ive gone through about 19 or 20 boxes since december. not 1 "bad" batch. i think at this point people just dont know what they are talking about. who knows. all coals have some sort of smell to them. even naturals. youre burning something. a chemical reaction occurs. smell happens. it may be how sensitive one is to it though. i never notice anything. my woman swears she can smell them when i light them from the other room. it differs from person to person.a faster way to get them red hot is to make a heavy duty foil "tent" I do this and place it over the coals and heating coil and the coals light up in a minute if that. make sure its heavy duty though because ive burned right through the foil before. gaia.plateau
Exoticas actually aren't supposed to smell, that's why they have a big ghostbusters-crossy-outy-circle thing over the word "Smell" on their box. That being said, a slightly noticeably, charcoal smell while lighting is excusable, even Coco Naras have that if you hold them right up to your nose. It's a different case for them to make the room smell like chemicals, which is what Exoticas often do even in "good" batches. Voski
The best part about exoticas are that they are $4.50 a box locally. I still buy coco-nara off the internet I prefer them that much more.
kornkitten42
For who ever asked about the "new batch", mahir @ Nazarhookah say's he just got the new ones in yesterday. I am going to order a box before he sends out my previous order.

This may be the difference. Thanks, NealNo Barcode on the box, I would say these are the new ones..In response to the questions I was reading.I light the coals on my back porch with a coil burner, set it on high, place the coals on for 4-5 minutes, turn them over, another 4-5 minutes. They were a solid orange color all the way through when no lights were on, With the light on there were visible cracking all over the square pieces I had broke. The smell during the lighting isn't so much because it's outside, but it was VERY apparent during the session, my brother who is down the hall about 40 feet was complaining about what the heck was smelling. Very abrasive to the nose.I'll definately give keeping them on the stove longer and such a try. Although for my thoughts, the best coals are ones that don't need such care in lighting.
