Lakemonster
Hey...... I am just gonna put this out there.... and y'all can start thrownig your rotten tomatoes. I personally have dismantled 2 Egyptian hookah stems.. and I can say this with more that a straight face. Both of them were made using salvaged water or gas line. This being the actual tube that runs down from the top of the stem all the way down into the water. The reason I say this is that one was new..... and had the smell of Nat gas and a severe level of corrosion.... even slight pitting on the tubing on the non-exposed areas of the tubing when dismantled. The second was not as bad... but showed signs of many years of use in a wet or buried situation. I need to get some pics if I still have that old stem..... I put the second one back together already...

mushrat
Doesn't suprise me in the least. Where do you think these things are being made?? I'm willing to be they are being cranked out in little shops all over syria, egypt, lebanon, etc out of what the folks have availible. You can bet there isn't a shiny, sterile, modern, well supplied and run "factory" cranking out your traditional hookahs. They make them and sell them for next to nothing to a middle man/supplier who then sends them on to the sites we buy them from. Now there's "traditional" for you.... Now take apart a chinese Sultan and I'll bet you money its a different story...

Lakemonster
Yes.... it was the second one I spoke of..... Im not at all goin to say that egyptian hookahs arent good smoking devices....... I'm just reporting my observation. Some Egyptian hookahs use some cast parts. But the big ones are made from stamped sheet metal. The reason they are made from that is: 1. they are cheaper to produce. 2. You can economically form those large flares and designs without breaking the bank like you would with a casting. (less raw meterial involved) That is why Syrian and Persian models are more slender in appearance.... Chinese too for that matter.
mushrat
Actually, I find the recycled parts to rather impressive. Nothing wasted. Americans could earn a few lessons. As long as nothing possibly toxic is involved mind you... It's like the swords made by a company called Windlass. They advertise cheap stuff but nice looking stuff in Atlanta Cutlery catalogs. Many of their blades are made from cast off leaf springs from cars and trucks. You use what you have, If it works well, why worry?
