We Are All So Screwed!

For those that haven't heard the rumors or got the bills. Check out this article.

With broadband charging by the byte, torrents are screwed, watching movies on netflix screwed to, and to all those people who use the iTunes and Zune store. Sharing Pictures? Online Gaming? Forum Chat?.... you get the idea.

I heard about this a few weeks ago locally when a few friends of mine called me about the change in their bill to by the rate. I just thought it was the two stupid wireless companies, Clearwire and Xandoo. But with reading this article ....AWWWWWWWW... what the hell?!?!?!?

I really don't think that this will happen for a lot of major ISPs. For instance, Fios already charges a huge amount for their middle and higher end connections. If they go to charging like the article is saying they will quickly realize that people will go apeshit.
However, alot of cell phone companies already do this. For instance, Verizon wireless broadband cards cap you but give the best coverage. Spring, ATT etc usually give you unlimited but have crap for coverage (in Richmond anyway). That is for their actual broadband cards. I think sprint is moving towards capping people though too.

The only companies that really do this are companies that cant afford users downloading a lot.. Such as most satellite companies, who set limits on their customers connections...

But I cant see major ISP's doing this.. It's just plain nonsense, and if they do... I'll kill myself.

I doubt this is going to happen. But the same as gas prices, when you get a "high demand" a higher price is asked almost every time. Demand is at an all-time high this year over years passed. Consumers and businesses depend on cheap internet to sell their wares, we'll see what happens. Once again though, I doubt it.

I dunno, I see this as becoming THE way broadband will be. Time Warner's model seems pretty damn expensive and measly for what you pay for, so that's really disappointing, hopefully other ISPs will give a little more.

Personally I think it's somewhat understandable. Bandwidth these days is being really strained with the advent of torrents and more and more p2p sharing in general. Broadband is getting more and more people every day, and it's becoming more and more apparent that the whole damn infrastructure needs to be upgraded, and soon. The money has to come from somewhere, I suppose. Just so long as it's a bit more fair than a measly 50GB a month for almost $60, what a rip off.

Jesus H Christ.

You all talk about 50Gb's like it's chicken feed!

I remember my first modem. 50/300 Acoustic coupled modem

Would take about 300 years to download 50Gigs using that tongue.gif

I had a vodafone 3g card that had a 1G Limit - never actually managed to reach it. It's farily obvious that the only people to have any real fears are going to be the major players in online digital piracy.

I bet folks would be so keen to share a movie when they have a pay-as-you-go costing tongue.gif

JD

PS - I remember my parents first £300 [$600] phone bill back in 1986. Now that was being deep in the shit!

I don't know of a single ISP in Canada that does this. Relax.

Telus, Shaw, and Bell all have 'allowances' on internet traffic. Then you pay extra per GB.

That being said, I guess my neighbours are screwed cause I add about 100Gb to their bills... Oh ohmy.gif

That argument doesn't make sense... Oil prices are driven up by high demand and virtually non-increasing supply. I don't think the internets are going to dry up anytime soon happy.gif

Maybe it's different in Quebec... unless you're talking about like, crazy-huge allowances. I have shaw, and I download an average of 5-10gb/day.

I had a friend with 3 servers on one T3 internet connection, that was uploading over 500gb/day... I forget what company he was going through but yeah, that's the only time I've ever heard of someone having limits put on their bandwith-usage in my region.

Bell in Quebec and Telus in BC are really tight-ass about the traffic and will charge you for every extra Gb above their 'allowance'. Shaw in BC theoretically has an allowance, but they don't charge (yet) which doesn't mean they won't be in the right if they suddenly decide to change that.
I'm not really concerned with the whole thread though... between my neighbours' technical illiteracy and the fact that I only download via http on campus it's a non issue wink.gif Edited by erufiku

  • 2 weeks later...
Someone was saying in the feedback comments that people who download 3g between 19:00 and 21:00 would get put on restrictions.

Isn't this a case of a few selfish file sharers fucking it up for the 95% of 'normal' users?
