Anyone use Abu Hitan Charcoal?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

My first post on this forum,  but i've been smokin hookahs for a
few years now.  Just wondering if anyone has used the Abu Hitan
Japanese charcoals because I have free access to a large quantity of
them for just shipping cost.  My friends and I have been using 3
kings quickstarts for a while now,  so i just needed your guys'
reviews.  Does Abu give a long burn time and does it burn fairly
clean?

thank in advance to any replies

I like Japanese coals and I believe I had this brand before. As far as Japanese coals go, this brand is one of the better. I found them to burn roughly the same length of time as 3 kings and maybe a bit cleaner. Some people claim an odd taste, but I liked them just fine. They need to be lit on the stove, but it is much cleaner than fingers aor natural wood chunks. Of course, like any ney coal, they demand a different technique, but I could give you pointers if you do get them.
So, how does one find a deal like this on these coals?
Hope this helped some. I personally would go for it.

Hey Bubble,

I actually acquired these via a friend of a friend.  His dad had a
cigar/pipe/smokeshop that he just got rid of and he had like 4 boxes of
this stuff that he just wants to get rid of.  Me and a friend just
have to pay for shipping to get these to us.

I would gladly take some pointers and techniques in lighting these coals.

This is where we disagree. I had some star coals and always seemed to take away some of the flavor of the tobacco. The one thing I loved about them were the speed at which they light. I wish they all would light that way.
About the Japanese coals, here is what I did:
I got a large tin can of sour Kraut, ate it, then cleaned up the can, punching a few small holes in the bottom. This is my coal lighting can.
If you look at the japanese coals, you will see they come in a strip of 4 squares. Break apart the 4 squares. Now, take 2 small squares, saw a groove with a steak knife through the center of each square and snap them in half. After doing this to 2 squares, you will have 4 small rectangles. I take thee of the rectangles (this will probably depend on the size of your bowl. I use standard Egyptian bowls) and drop them in the can over high heat. Load your bowl and punch the holes and whatever ritual you practice. When finished, your coals will probably be starting to burn. Let them catch on fire. Once on fire, gently blow on them untill the (what once was) silver coating flakes off. I had good success by taking these 3 little rectangles and arranging them on my bowl in a triangular pattern. Now, just smoke.
Remember that tastes vary. You may like them, or you may hate them. Never will know until you try them. After all, you are getting one heck of a deal. Lucky fart.
Cheers buddy,
MR Bubble
