So We Went Real Old School...

Recommended Posts

So, apparently before Zaghoul and Moussal Saloum and all the non-flavoured tobaccos, there was Ajami. My friend from Lebanon was telling me about the stuff that they suded to smoke when he was younger back home. How it was his job to set up the hookahs for the older family members. This was how it was done when hookahs were 1st intruduced in the middle east, atleast relating to tboacco. So I'm in a local store and I see this stuff in a package and figure this HAS to be what he was talking about.

You take the dried leaves, crumble some up in a container of water and let it sit for about 5 minutes to soften. Then you take several intact leaves and soak them as well. After the tobacco is soft you take the crumbled up stuff, squeeze the water out and place it in a large shallow bowl. mound it up over the top of the bowl. Then you take the full leaves and wrap them around the outside. Then you use a poker to bore a single hole down through the top and wriggle it around a bit to create air flow, somethink like a phunnel. Then you place th coals around the hole in the center. and start puffing. Let me say I inhaled a few times and nearly hacked up a lung. It's primarily for puffing he says. was very good flavour, kind of like a tasty smooth cigar. Anyways, here are some pictures.

Woah, that looks like an alien getting ready to hatch from your bowl wink.gif

Does it leave a heavy tobacco aftertaste like cigars?

hey mush do you think this would be a good base tobacco for some home meade sheesh ?

Actually, I suspect it would work quite well as a base tobacco for home made sheesh. Nice light taste, aromatic, ya it think it would do.

Well it says Ajami on the package... and the color/consistency seems to be identical based on the pic wink.gif

I think it's a camera issue... I'm pretty sure mush took his photos with flash.

Notice how in the 3rd picture in the first post the tobacco is darker (no flash).

edit: Anyway this is just guesswork, let's wait for Mushrat to reply smile.gif Edited by erufiku

this is commercially available.... I get mine at a local middle eastern shop.

You soak it in water. its reallllllllll dry (cracks to pieces when you try bending it)

I dont know what is the proper soaking time..I've heard 12 hour...24 hours...6 hours...
