i can't get thick smoke with my hookah
i've tried using more coal and a windcover but the smoke tastes harsh
i've also tried ice in the base but that hardly helps!!

anyone any sugesstions

it is a syrian hookah and it is al fakher tobacco

Hrm, then the only thing that I could think would be to try packing the shisha differently. Looser, tighter, pack the bowl more fully, etc.

Also might want to add extra holes to the foil, that has worked for me in the past.

Often problems can we created because your not packing enough tobacco.

What kind of bowl and coals are you using - any pics available of the bowl?

As Said earlier, fluff the tobacco [I use a fork and mix like hell, then pack it into the bowl] then pack it down.

Another trick is after you have made the holes in the foil is to suck through the underside of the bowl and see if your getting enough airflow.

Try this

very loose tobacco...
fill the bowl below the rim

make the foil really tight

use a small amount of coals and the windcover

i use a egyptian clay bowl and natural finger coal

All I have been smoking lately is AF Mango, I get great smoke I have found that you sprinkle the shisha in the bowl so it is filled but not packed tight then I push down a bit so it wont be touching the foil. Then I use very thin foil and one Golden QL and I get huge clouds of smoke with lots of flavor. The bowl lasts me about 2 hours, easy, I havent gotten around to doing a 3rd set of coals yet but Im sure I could get 3 hours in if I wanted to on that setup. BTW I am just using a standard egyptian bowl.

Make sure your hookah is airtight. Block off the stem with your thumb and try to blow outward with the hose. Is it a vacuum?

I've found a few tricks.

you could try a muffler on the bottom of the stem. they're pretty cheap and just slide right on.

adding a bit more water also gives thicker smoke. if you're at an inch above the bottom of the stem, try like another half inch or so.

i just tried this next one yesterday...2 layers of foil. pack everything as you normally would, then put one piece of foil on (shiny side up), then put another piece on (shiny side down) so that the shiny sides are touching. then poke holes through both layers and smoke like you normally would

More heat, more tobacco. I always wondered why I never got any smoke with my first one, it took me like 4 tries to finally figure out I needed more coal.

+1 to more heat and more tobacco.

JD's suggestion is a good one! did that a few times and it works great.

to boost smoke after getting the bowl right. Add a little milk to the base or put a few drops of lime or lemon juice on the tobacco.

practice, practice, practice!
Try everyones solution and try mixing up different techniques.
Eventually you will find what works best for you.
Just stay patient and keep practicing.
