Importance Of Coal

Recommended Posts

soooooo....as I hope you all know, I am Zona Tobacco, been sending out samples, getting some good and some not so good reviews(at least to me) and started to really get into the Why? with some of these not so great reviews...
and I have been doing some in-house testing...
switching out the coals, using exotica, diamamonte insta-lights and my own coal(which I am sorry, I can't sell yet) and realized that the coal is massively affecting the flavor...and I mean massively...I could not smoke my own tobacco(which I LOVE)with diamonte at all..tasted like crap and soap in a bowl...ala 2-girls and a cup..totally a joke...lol
well...just wondering..I am going to get some coco-naras(sp?) but what else should I test with before I come to a conclusion..
I love this...testing, is me just smoking more and more...
work?????haaa

Naturals and better QL's is the way to go. Try Nour naturals, coconaras (as you mentioned you would), 3Kings QL's, Golden QL's, and Pharaoh's Elite QL's. The coals I've just named off are pretty much the gold standard right now.

Quick Lights are the work of the devil [Not Neal tongue.gif]

Compressed coals (sometimes called naturals] Like Exotica or Golden Canary or Japanese Easy lights should not impart any taste.

Naturals or lump wood coals, should be the cleanest. But I don't think there is much between naturals and lump wood.

I would be mildly surprised if you got taste affecting from the naturals/lump wood.

The biggest problem with be individual palette's. What tastes good or strong to me might taste shit and weak to the next man.

I really don't see how it would affect it that much unless the coals you're using burn at an extremely different temperature or add a significant flavor to the smoking process.

I've found that when testing all the shisha me and AK make we just use the same kind of stuff that a lot of people on the forums use. That way you have the best idea of how it's going to be for everyone else.

only time coals ever affected the taste for me is when i was a weeee little noob and lit the QL while it sat on the foil, first couple of puffs were pretty gnarly

in my experience...
naturals work great for length of session and good regulation of heat.
quicklights are an easy fix, I've had finicky experiences with them, but if too little heat, takes 1min to add another...the reason I have trouble though is because I have a mod bowl sad.gif

Goldens, are the best of the qls, in my opinion, better than 3k.

Exoticas are my favorite for heat distribution, but can depart a bitter taste if not allowed to burn bright red for the optimal time (which can vary, I have found. Annoying.) Coco Naras are amazing for longevity and for lack of flavor, but the price is ridiculous. So, I'd say exoticas are good, if you pick them up from a place that checks them, like H-S, but you have to make sure to let em burn for a while before smoking them.

I have been using Belgian Natural coals lately (Thanks again Mushrat for turning me on to them.) But today I decided to give exoticas a try again.. I actually noticed a difference in taste. ( I was smoking starbuzz Lemon Tea.)
