Speeding Ticket!

n0s

Recommended Posts

So I just got a speeding ticket on my way to work today, 36 in a 30 which shoudln't even count because it was down a steep hill. But whatever, what really makes me mad is that it's 100 bucks!!! Does anything else think thats rediculous?

I tried looking up the statutes and could only find one from 2001 that said violations of 6-10 over are $25

Does anyone have any greater knowledge or references on this matter? I know I deserve the ticket but thats like 5 cases of beer or over 2 kilos of tangiers

Depends on the state your in......im assuming you know this and have tried looking it up. Did you get any points? If you didnt, at least your insurance wont be going up.

If it makes you feel better I failed my 1st drivers test for going 33 in a 35 and ended up costing me around 200 to get everything set up again.

Sounds about right. Colo, Wyo, CA, and AZ are bad states to get a ticket in, fines are nuts.

plead NG, and hope the copper doesn't show up.

*sigh* Try paying the ticket for 84 in a 65. Of course I was REALLY going much faster, lucky the cop gave me a break. I just paid it and said thank you. That's what happens when you buy a brand new, very fast car. biggrin.gif

My 1 and only speeding ticket was $197 plus traffic school. Going about 55 in a 35. Thats what happens when you build a fast, track-dedicated car and drive it on the streets tongue.gif

6mph over the limit is very picky and there are a few options you have. First of all did you plead guilty at the scene of the ticketing? Did you tell the officer that you were traveling a certain speed? If not then you have a few options;

1. Pay the fine and move on.
2. Trial by Declaration (something I'm not sure NY has), plead not guilty and go from there.
3. Go to court on the date given to you plead not guilty.
4. Pleady guilty in court and ask for the fine to be reduced or make a case as to why you deserve a lesser punishment. Don't bring up what you said in your original post about it not mattering since it was down a steep hill. Speeding is speeding weather it's up or down a hill. Talk about how the ocnditions were good for such a speed and make your case in that way. Talk about the flow of traffic if there was traffic. Ask if the officers radar is calibrated (assuming he used radar and not laser).

Good luck with the ticket and let us know how it turns out!

It almost isn't worth fighting without a lawyer on your side. Of course a lawyer will cost at least as much if not more than a ticket, but then there are the points, or the driving school costs and time if it's even available, oh yeah and the possibility of an insurance penalty down the road.
Bite the bullet get a lawyer, get one who is well known in the courthouse, ask around hell ask a cop who is good.
I'm lucky got a friend who was a prosecuter now in private practice, and another lawyer who just likes me from a past arrangement.
Everytime I go in with one of them I win.
And here is the best possibility your lawyer talks to the city attorney and just asks him to drop the charge, it happens that easy.
All the lawyers know each other, that's why ya need a local known by the courthouse folks.

This is all just an up your ass tax.
Remember Robin Hood? Remember the Sherrif of Nottingham?
He was the local law and his main function was to protect the rich and collect taxes from the poor.
We have the same situation more or less today.
And the solution then is the same for today.
Yes we need to take our bows and arrows and go hide in the woods and shoot at the rich and their servants the cops when they try to pass.
Humiliate them take their clothes and stuff, clean their pockets and don't forget to share the loot with the rest of the working class.
Hmm well maybe it's easier to just pay the ticket and hope they screw someone else next time.
Just remember you will never become a part of folklore and legend that way.
No one will write songs about your brave heroic adventures and sing them in the taverns either.

I agree that it pretty much operates as a tax. If you are lucky, you don't get hit up for it too often. Also, if you are LUCKY, your insurance company doesn't check your record for the ticket, and your insurance doesn't go up (if you don't change insurance and just renew, they don't always catch it).

So far, I have only gotten two tickets in over 20 years of driving (and yes, I drive FAST). So, averaged out, it's not that bad.

I did get a ticket once for expired emissions sticket (expired by over a year--hey, I was BUSY). I managed to get that one dropped by claiming that since I had to pay a late fee at emmissions, paying a ticket was a double fee for the same offense.

I just sucked it up and paid it, they gave me 10 bucks off for wearing my seatbelt to dampen the pain

But to add to it, I got in an argument with an officer at the entrance because he thought my thumb drive was a knife...

shoulda taken it to court, especially if they used radar to get the speed...there's a 2 mph laxness on the radar gun's side, and a 2 mph laxness on the car's spedometer...2 mph over would get thrown out so fast.

Dunno what you guys use Stateside, but UK use the LT20/20 - It's shit.

In a recent course case they proved, in court, that the LT20/20 recorded a speed of 12MPH.... ON THE COURT ROOM WALL tongue.gif

I got a 42 MPH in a 25 MPH a month ago. $160.80 and 4 points wallbash.gif

I have a lead foot. I should get a fuzz buster. Are they worth it??

Just pay the ticket, I know it sucks, but it is not worth the trouble. It will be gone from your record on the one year anniversary of it.

I know that mine has saved me more times than I can count. The key is to not let one give you a false sense of security.

yea lead i had mine confiscated (sorry nj transplant) about 3 years ago when i got pulled.
the reason wasn't speeding because i picked up the 50 before they picked up me. it was because they saw my radar detector. my lovely lovely 300 dollar cobra. they took it and said deal with it.
on the flipside - speeding laws depend by state and locality. for instance a state can have a 50mph on public roads but the town may be 25mph. if you blow through at 50 you get hit with the town speeding ticket.
also depends if its a work zone etc. theres a hill near my dad's that is a steep one. you do more than 15 on that (even though the limit is 20) and they hit you with a 100 dollar ticket. basically its because of the speed/safety of those at the bottom of the hill.

depending on what kind of radar they used you might be able to get out of it. if the cop car was stationary they can get you going 2mph over. but its my understanding that if they get you on moving radar while there driving towards you or behind you the radar has a margin of error thats +/- 10 mph.

lol my 100 in a 65 wasn't much more expensive than that laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Around here, 100 in a 65 gets you reckless driving--that gets you arrested. Anything 20 mph over the speed limit does. That's a BIG no no for your car insurance rates. That's why the officer that gave me my ticket gave me 84 in a 65 instead of 85 (or more), and I was VERY HAPPY.

Here, they use laser. Very hard to get it with a detector, since they just flash it at you for a sec, and you're busted. The detector just pretty much lets you know they got you (or a car near you).
