roommate wanted ad in the local paper?
But seriously, i would suggest on the stove under the hood with thte vent fan on to cut back on the initial smell. If the charcaol smells though the entire smoking session, I'd have to agree with yashman about getting a better coal. Gotta be effecting the taste as well.

well its mostly the initial smell,  im using some cheeper 3 crowns coals, i prefer 3 kings.

but my stupid little bro decided he wanted to buy a hookah so he bought
a box of 100 coals a bunch of tabaco, and a hookah.  well my mom
found it, and took it from him and gave it to me. im to
cheep to go buy coals when i have about 70 left.

but lighting outside does seem like it will work.

I use either Japanese coal brand, They are nearly odorless and
tasteless, the fake sulfur-containing brands smell awful, some smell
comes from completely natural coal. Chemistry tells us alot of the
smell comes from partially unburned chemicals, mainly from the
binder/glue that sticks the coals back together. I don't know if that
helps.

japanese coals ROCK !!!!!!!!!! WOOHOO
!!!!!! - i used loads of sh*te old 3 kings coal and they used to STINK,
now using japanese coals eliminates all the smell apart from the actual
flavoured smoke smell  ( if that made any sense )

but that goes in a matter of minutes anyway after turning the hookah off.
